Beware the sat nav in a 2011 Tekna! Got mine in March and thought the whole HDD system was fab, especially the quality of the hands free, and the sat nav seemed fab when being used locally. In the same month I also got a 25 foot caravan and we started to 'tour'. One of our journies was from Formby to Anglesey, and this is where we encountered problems.
Firstly our outfit is too long for the tunnels, and since you cannot change a preference, the sat nav wanted to go under the Mersey. We ignored it and drove towards Chester, and twice on the motorway stretches the sat nav was asking us to negotiate roundabouts that had clearly not been there for some time. It also asked us a couple of times to keep left or right and on these occasions the verbal instructions were different than the lane displayed on screen, luckilly my wife spotted this and we remained on track.
Then for no apparent reason it took us over Snowdonia, and the weather was terrible too. It scared me to death, but since we had no atlas on board (last time we make that mistake!) we followed the nav :( .
Took the Tekna straight back to the dealers, and informed them that I had Googled 2011 update for the sat nav, and that they were available to purchase online. The dealer checked my system and told me that I have the latest map - 2010 version 1. I then explained all this again to Nissan customer services [sic] and a pleasant lady told me that since I bought in March 2011 the map would be up to date. I then tried to explain that the map was incorrect, and the system had issues, she told me that updates are issued every 3 to 4 years!!! I tried to explain that roads change daily, that the world might no longer be here in 3 to 4 years, AND that I can update maps on my TomTom iphone 4 app every day - FREE! She is to get back to me. Close to £30K on a car and since I have had TomTom from the first unit they produced, I have now spent £80 on a docking station for the iphone (enhances the GPS and has a decent speaker) and will use that until Nissan sort out the maps. Had to do this as next month we are off the Scotland and we cannot use the ferry service (again length of the outfit and steep roads) - and you have guessed, I have put the journey into the sat nav, and even when you ask for alternative routes, it still sends you to the ferry! My TomTom app on my phone warns you of the ferry crossing and asks if you want to use it!! (£50 for this app). I didn't want another sat nav as I also have a TomTom go for my wifes car, but Nissan offers no choice with the Tekna - they need to sought this out as I think they have bought a pup.

You've hit the nail on the head, if you're going to take an atlas, do you really need a sat nav?

We have just come back from France and it performs no better over there.......looking for non existent junctions etc ....... and a so called top of the range car that has a Sat Nav that doesnt even take UK postcodes! ......worse than useless.....I keep having to revert to the navigation app on my android....its ten times better!
Hi all, My Garmin nuvi has the latest up to date maps, last week took the new M74 extension to the M77, and sat nav went crazy trying to re-calculate route, and showing the car flying over fields, it turns out that maps can be as much as two years out of date in some cases, even with the so called up to date maps, Have found last years road map more up to date.
Hi stef and mandy, you will find that sat nav may not work around the Loch Lomond, can be a lot of sat nav blind spots. My old tom tom tried to take me across the Loch, I was on the west banks and wanted to go to Balmaha the east banks.

If in Doubt Check it Out.
Same thing happened to me when i had a57 plate told me to turn right which led to a narrow lane just wide enough to fit the van down. Did not use it again wife had her eyes closed all the way
Ha ha I had an 02 plate top of the range Primera T Spec. The sat nav was dire. I tried to find a client in Pinhoe in a house built more than 30 years ago to no avail, ditto clients in Kilve.
They wanted something like £400 for the update discs, 4 times the price of a decent Garmin system. I then bought an 02 plate X Trail and I deliberately went for just the sport model, basic, no frills, no sat nav or stupid air con controlled by the screen etc. Why? Because in the Primera the dvd player went wrong and had I not had a year's warranty with it the bill would have been £2,000.
Nissan have lost the plot in recent years that's for sure, says she with 3 on the drive but not one of them less than 9 years old! They can keep their massively over priced underperforming gadgets thank you very much.
I got my Techna in May, you can change preferences based on road type, tolls etc !! But normally I drive the car and make the desicions and let the sat nav 'assist' !
All of my sat nav's have had strange quirks or routes 'trying' to take me via weird routes, but they are there as an assistant, not a dictator !
Angela YES I DO NEED SAT NAV!. My wife has severe motion sickness, cannot take her eyes off the road, and although you appear to be oppinionated without knowning the person posting the note, you must if you have even the smallest of brains, realise that if you are towing a long outfit, motorists would have killed you pulling in/stopping etc to read a map yourself as a driver - we all have crosses to bare, please accept that people out here are not you!

The problem with Sat Navs is people rely/depend on them way to much. People think that they can just input a destination and everything will be fine, but that is not always the case. Sat Navs need interpreting and setting up. Some Sat Navs have very few routing options (especially OEM versions) and with OEM versions usually having maps more than a year old (even when they say 2011 /2012) this can make routing very tricky.
With a caravan you should see if there is an option for road type avoiding (Garmins do as I have one) also If you think that it may be taking you down a dodgy route, stop and read the route itinerary (this will give you a turn by turn list of all the roads you will be taking)
Really you should be using your Sat Nav with a traditional paper map, especially if you are going to an unfamiliar far away territory. Then, when you have in-putted a destination on your Sat Nav, you can read the route itinerary and then cross reference it with the paper map.
