We are taking our two cocker spaniels away this coming week for the first time - a bit nervous after reading this thread, worried about barking - but on plus side have already looked up some local dog friendly pubs etc and where the local doggy friendly beaches are.
It will sure be a learning curve - but we are kind of looking forward to the 'boys' first holiday!!!
Is it not in the T&C's of most site that dogs are not to be left alone on site when caravanner's/ campers go off site? Surely this is a slippery and dangerous road?
I have a dog and adapt our hols to suit.
In the situation of O/P I would try crate training, devise a program and work with it, not so easy with an older dog but do-able, use blankets to make it into a den, problem is back ground noise, this can cause some dogs to stress, new environments certainly do. (some dogs just adapt better than others)

Also Kongs can help, works a treat for my girl :) KONG.
She is only allowed this when I leave her, so she associates my going with good times. (helps her Separation anxiety)
