I am looking at keeping the weight down on our van and am interested in the BP Light Plastic gas bottles I have seen.
Currently the van has 2 heavy feeling Red steel 6KG propane bottles up front - they don't feel very full (only just got the van). I can't see us using much as we generally use hook up, so it will be for the oven/hob mainly.
If I get the plastic bottles what else do I need in order to connect them? And does anyone know if I can offset the cost by taking my 2 old bottles back somewhere?
If your caravan has a bulkhead regulator then you will need 27mm clip fitting for pigtail to use BP bottles. If you have an older 'van with bottle top regulator you will need a 27mm clip propane regulator(37mb).
Calor won't take your bottles back for cash but you may well sell them on a car boot etc. for a few quid each.
Alternatively you could stay with Calor(I assume your bottles are Calor) & go for the Calor Lite bottles which you might be able to exchange for your existing bottles(some suppliers will, some won't, I think). The Lite bottles use the same regulator fitting as your current bottles, so you would save a fair bit to stick with Calor as presumably the Calor Lite weigh similar to the BP bottles.
I agree with Tenz that if you already have Calor bottle change them for Calor Lite, that way you will only pay for the gas. A couple of things about BP LIght bottles ( I use one for my BBQ at home) the 5kgs bottle is dumpier that the Calor and the 10kgs is quite tall and I can't get one in the locker of my Swift so you need to check how much space to have.
never with any of the calor lite bottles have i had a gauge fitted.david if it helps i did weigh one before fitting it.full it weighs 22lbs or 10 kgs.not tried it but believe if you pour hot water down the side it will show a line of the level of gas.easier to weigh it.i use two bottles now.some have had trouble getting replacements of calor lite.
just bought a full one at a CCC site £23.50.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
BP Light gas for us....swapped from calor and never looked back. Can get 2x10Kg in our van!lasts for ages.Think calor have a monopoly though
Yep BP for me too , one 10kg and one 5kg , your right the 10kg ones do last a long time . Only slight down side is the 10kg one is a bit of a squeeze to get in the front locker .
I changed to BP a couple of years ago for two reasons, firstly it's a lot lighter for me to handle, and secondly I can actually see how much gas I have left in the bottle! It cost me a new regulator and I changed the tubing at the same time, but I will never go back.
I have 2 calor lite bottles fitted , 1 with a gauge on , 1 without, I only use site with a ehu so a bottle lasts a full season, have just gone onto the one with the gauge on , the other is empty, will ask for another with a gauge when i renew it

We have used BP Gaslight (2x10kg bottles) for quite some time, and will never change back. And it's reassuring to be able to visually check the level of gas remaining. I recently bought an exchange bottle from a local distributor (£27.50), and he tells me that BP are to actively expand the supply chain.
At the moment we are looking at changing our van, but one important criteria is that it must accept the BP 10kg bottles.
