We used to have a cristall caravan that used the table to make up the bed and we often thought about converting to slats but never got around to it.  You would also have to get a folding table for meals and find somewhere to store it.

We once made a set for our old Avondale out of beechwood, OH is a retired carpenter and joiner, and he used beech for its strength, you need to sand off the sharp edges of the wood so that it doesnt cut into the underneith fabric of the seat cushions, then varnish them with clear varnish a couple of coats to help them slide easier and protect from any condensation, which could set up a mildew growth on bare wood.

They were held together by thick nylon webbing attached by brass cupscrews, you also need to make a stop block on the seat runner at each end to avoid movement during the night as you move around. if your caravan doesnt have afront draw chest, then you can simply push them all along to the front during the day to make a handy shelf for your book or newspapers ect, they are a bit of a pain to handle and roll up due to the loose webbing between them, they easily get tangled up!

Due to the costs of hardwood these days you might be cheaper to buy a set from a breakers yard, we were lucky enough to get ours for free as off-cuts from a job OH was working on at the time.

You can get packs of pine slats from B & Q and the webbing too. I did this years ago and had no problems using it and I'm a big bloke !
