We have recently collected a brand new Bailey Unicorn Almeria and the water has a really funny and unpleasant taste. Its not an "off" taste but kind of like mothballs/TCP. We can taste it in a cup of tea and also smell it on our hands after washing them or doing dishes. Have tried flushing water through the system for ages and thoroughly cleaning the aquaroll in case its that but nothing has worked. The filter is brand new so it cant be that. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas as to what it can be? We have started filling the kettle with bottled water as a cup of tea or coffee taste really unpleasant otherwise. Thanks in advance.
Can you borrow another aquaroll and try that, then try without filter, if taste is still there it will be in your pipework, have you tried flushing with aquachem or similar to see if this makes a difference. If all this failed I think I would be asking for it to be rectified under guarantee.
We had the same experience years ago, my little bit of advice is never fill the kettle from the tap in the van, what we bought was a homebrew barrel with a tap. So when we finished setting up l would fill the barrel from the campsite water supply and use that water for our tea/coffee and also for cooking. After each trip l flush the barrel with sterilizing fluid. Hope this helps

Hi ally b, Did you sterilize the system with purification fluid before use. (Pipe flush) is good, and there are a few others that will do the job, which ever one you chose, Put the measured amount into the aqua roll/water container, fill with water, fill up system, leave for about 1hour, flush water container through system, re-fill with fresh water and re-flush, (then drain down system if you are not going to use), that should fix the problem, there will be other members along shortly with their tried and tested products. Hope that helps.

If in Doubt Check it Out.
Ours was like this when new, it's like it on occasions now even after four years.
Strange really seems to be no reason for it, can happen just once on a site out of the blue, but we have even had it at home.
I don't really see much point in always using a different container or bottled water for drinking and cooking. I don't see the point in having a modern running water system and then reverting back to having to pour it from a container.

I quite agree with you Janx. It seems really crazy to be filling kettles and having drinks of water etc from water containers and bottles when you have an all singing, all dancing, modern caravan. So, will try flushing it through with pipe flush stuff and hope that it settles down and if it stays really bad will probably take it back to the dealer to hopefully sort out.
Milton or supermarket own brand baby bottle sterilizer will kill bugs , put it in the aqua roll overnight and run the taps until the pipes are full too . All flushes will leave a `swimming bath water taste`. After flushing use Aqua-Sol . This will kill the taste and is also a sterilizer . Aqua-Sol is inexpensive to use because so little is used in an Aqua Roll and the taste of your tea afterwards is excellent , almost as good as a brew from rainwater .
I use puriclean (from Halfords) to clean my system.
Could it just be the water from a different region that is tasting funny? I know some places I've been the water tastes different from home. The nearer London I get, the more it tastes like neat bleach to me.

I think you will find that it is the chlorine based 'cleaners' that leave a 'swimmingpool taste' The non chlorine based ones such as Puriclean don't leave a taste (at not least that I have ever noticed!) and they also shift the gunk that builds up on the insides of the pipes that the chlorine based stuff does not. I helped one of my neighbours clean his system the other day and he had only used Milton type fluids in the paste and this time he used some of my Puriclean. He was amazed at the slime that came out of the taps when flushing through. I firmly believe that this gunge is what causes stomach upsets when drinking water from the caravan system as it looks like the perfect culture medium for bacteria. Some of the newer chemicals such as those produced by Truma and Elsan may also achieve similar results to Puriclean but I have not tried them yet.

We have a Pegasus and have had no problems. It has an onboard tank but we don't use it!
The only time we got funny tasting water was with an Abbey which had an onboard tank. That needed regular cleaning with milton tablets, followed by a flush through job done!

I seem to remember Bailey had a problem with the chemical composition of the water pipes used in construction a couple of years ago causing a TCP like taste in the water could this be a recurrence of this issue?

Yes , that is what i have read before but i dont think it was just bailey.
What is your dealer saying ? You have a new van , maybe they can help.
I mentioned the new Truma stuff above, and we used it for the first time earlier in the year and it done a great job of shifting the rubbish out of the pipes and making them like new.
I also use the Truma AS3 now in the summer when its warm as this help keep the water fresher.
I also recommend Puriclean rather than milton for the same reasons mentioned above by others.
We get our new van next week, and that will be getting the AS or Puriclean treatment.
We always had the same problem with the tea tasting in our old van and again in our new Bailey Unicorn. We now flush pipes and also aquaroll everytime with go out and never have a problem now. We use Aqua Sol a complete water treatment you can also use it for cleaning veg and fruit etc.
