Hi, I'm looking to chop my car in so that I can consider a heavier van in the next couple of years.  I've noticed vehicles like the Ford Mondeo and Skoda Superb have manufacturers tow limits of much more than the kerb weight of the car.

Couple of questions on this, does anyone know how this is worked out by the manufacturer, and is it really safe in a situation where you have to stop swiftly.

My gut instinct is to stick to the 85% rule no matter what Ford and Skoda say, I can't see how 1800kg can be stopped quickly by 1550 kg.  Physics being what it is and all.

The tow limit is for trailers other than caravans. You should stick to the 85%.

You are quite right what you say about towing details regarding manufacturers. However, I think what they are confirming is the actual maximum towing capacity disregarding the 85% rule. I think that the Land Rover Discovery can tow another 50% of it's body weight due to it's design and torque but most of these trailers used by farmers etc. are twin axles anyway such as Horse box. Even though the 85% figure is only a rule regarding safety I would stick with this recommendation disregarding what the vehicle manufacturers state.

I own a Land Rover Discovery and can confirm the maximum braked trailer weight these can tow is 3.5 Tonne. If I were to use the low ration gear box combined with the torque these things produce I could probably tow the factory your caravan was built in...!!!!! I tow a 26ft twin axle van with my Disco and it never really struggles - Just take a while to get up to speed as my 96 plate model only has 111bhp and weighs will over 2 tonne with all my off road toys on.

All the maximum towing weight that the manufacturers give in handbooks says is that a car towing that weight whilst it is loaded to it's maximum weight is capable of stating off on a 12.5%hil whilst doing so. It is not even a legally enforceable limit but is just an advisory. You will find the true towing limit plated on the car as it's maximum train weight. Whatever the relevant limits it is inadvisable to tow a caravan that's weighs more than the car itself does. .

Bill

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Going over the 85% rule is in my opinion ok for an experienced tower of caravans but not over 100%.

Its all very well getting the towed unit away on a 12.5% gradient but you may also have to stop it on a 12.5% gradient.

If you are going super heavy a 4 x 4 may be more appropriate. Even the likes of a bmw 5 series touring only weighs in at 1600kg ex works.

Couple of questions on this, does anyone know how this is worked out by the manufacturer, and is it really safe in a situation where you have to stop swiftly.

It is a figure that does not compromise the structural integrity of the towcar and will also allow it to restart on a 1 in 8 incline. Whilst I do not know this for certain, I *think* the maximum towing weight relates to the lowest available forward gear (e.g. low 1st for a Disco).

The manufacturer's maximum towing weight has nothing to do with safety - so there is no answer to the second part of your question.

The max. towing figure also takes no account of the profile of the load, only the capability of the car.

My car also has a max figure of 3500kgs and it is also within the max train weight but I would hate to think what would happen if the wind got to a caravan of that weight.

As others have said, safe for experienced towers to go over 85% with a well balanced van and a correct set-up but would never consider going over 100%.

I researched a whole load of cars and 4x4's when I got my caravan. I ended up with a VW Passatt 2.0TDI estate which is approx 1715Kg kerbweight. I didn't want the running costs of a 4x4 and the passatt was one of the heaviest cars I could find.

I suppose the real problem with towing a caravan as opposed to a trailer is that caravans don't have decent brakes to stop themselves and have to rely on the tow vehicle brakes to stop it thus the reason for the 85% thingy...
