just bought a Tevion mini sat system for caravan and cant get a signal with the dish provided... the dish size is only 35cm and looking around I suspect its not big enought for use in the UK.. Has anyone else got one of these and got it to work with dish provided.
Is this one of those kits in a case?
Generally, the boom arm on these kit dishes need to be more or less horizontal and it's a temptation to set them up at a higher angle of elevation.
A satellite dish is not like a TV aerial. You cannot point it somewhere near the satellite and get a picture. It has to be set very accurately. It also helps if you have a meter as these will show when you are near the satellite so you don't shoot straight past it. Many of the meters in the decoders are a bit lagged. You certainly cannot hope to set it up by just looking for a picture.
We have had one for 2 years only place we had problem with it is Blackpool. Hubby set it up in back garden at first never had had aproblem you do need the meter though good luck
I bought one a couple of months ago thought what a bargain but could not get it to work up at the lakes. It has a knuckle system for adjustment which is difficult to set. If they had a method for up/down adjustment and one for rotating it would be better.

I have got a compass and meter with it but still no luck, book say elevation should be 23.22 but how the hell do you do that when you dont have any scale on the dish... used meter adjusted to lights turned sensativity down and fine tuned but still no "quality" reading aaaaaarrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhggggggggggg ........
I've got the Tevion set, and it works very well from N. Wales down to Cornwall; not so well in the N. East. As said, getting further north (into Scotland), you need a bigger dish. The elevation refers to the elevation of the satellite but as dishes are "offset", you're best starting off with the dish more or less vertical. This site is very good.

As Gram says, the dish, being elliptical, needs to be vertical. You'll need a better compass than the one supplied for setting the dish, there are plenty on Ebay.
First, check the dish instructions and set the LNB (the bit that goes on the end of the arm) to the recommended angle. Get your dish and receiver set up and connected to your TV, find the Set Up menu and select your chosen satellite (Astra 2), then select the signal strength page. With the dish vertical, stand away from your caravan, behind the dish (my caravan affects the compass) and get the direction of the satellite. Make sure you can see the TV screen and move the dish slowly left and right in the direction of the satellite. Once you're somewhere near, the signal strength should rise. Don't expect 100% on either scale, 50%-60% should be fine. You should then have a picture.
The Tevion receiver isn't very good but I set mine up using the Tevion unit then switch to a second-hand Sky box which is easier to use, having a better menu.
Hope this makes sense.
My Neighbour bought one for his house and struggled with it for 3 days. I offered to help but he refused ( I had many problems when I first bought one for the caravan and got help from this site) eventually he asked me to help him and he had mounted it on his house wall. When there was the 2 of us he watched the signal inside the house on the tv and I turned the dish from outside, we started by having the dish straight up vertical, then turned it very slowly towards south, we stopped at each degree of turn for about half a minute then moved it again, when we got a good signal (on the tv) shown by signal strength via the sat box,we locked the dish to stop it moving on the pole and then slowly altered the angle of the dish until max signal strength, it works great! and its a Tevion from Aldi. so please have patience and then enjoy the success, we live in Selby area of North Yorks. best of luck. set the dish vertical, point dead south.turn east very slow until you find 140 / 145 deg's on the compass and you have found the satellite.just a case of tweaking it left or right for signal strength.make sure all connections are sound.any large trees or fences within about 16 feet will prevent a signal i have found. an old trick is to point your wrist watch at 12 o'clock on the watch dead south, the satellite is at five to 12 o'clock.

I have one and it's great. I even took it to France and i had no problem gettinga signal around Paris. I think the most important tip is to keep the dish verical or even very slightly down. Most problems start when you start pointing it up at the sky. The supplied compass works quite well but I bought a signal meter for £10 with leds on and that helps greatly
Our 35cm dish works fine as well BUT you have to have a very clear view of the sky - a couple of branches in the way can be enough to lose your signal.
The bigger the dish, the less of a problem that is...

we must have a good picture on sky.grandchild and i sat watching football one night.when i turned round there was a guy outside watching it though the window too.lol.don't know but would think a mini dish hard to set up.

Recently bought one of these from Aldi havent tried setting it up as yet so all this is a great help for when I do! One further point, the dish comes with like some suction pad on it, how and where do you position this? Climbing up onto the top of the 'van' seems a little extreme or do you attach it to something else. Think I will be trying it at home before taking it out on site. Cheers
Success I manged to get it to work.... dish is almost vertical and once lined up with compass and the wife watching the signal and quality scales but after alot of messing and re-tightening of the fixing screw.
