I thought long & hard about one of those jockey wheel movers. I have not tried one but came to the conclusion that they are very limited in what the can do. Possibly ok on fairly level tarmac but not much else. But I have no experience of one. There's always several on ebay though.
In the end I went for a used powrtouch motor mover which has been money well spent. Got it on ebay.
I think the winch is also limited in its application but don't know what else you plan for it.
Are these the Purpleline Hitchdrives you're refering too?
Personally, I've never read many positive posts regarding them and they're generally (at best) only suitable for firm level ground i.e., no good on soft grass, loose shingle etc.
We had a jockey wheel type mover, and it (just) coped with our van fully loaded (approx 1400kg) on a flat tarmac drive; ask it to do any more than that and it was struggling. We eventually bought a Powrtouch mover which is fantastic - as with any mover this can also be relatively easily moved onto another van if you were to change it.
Regarding winch on the back... not sure what you intend to use it for, is the intention to use this as an anchor to pull something else? You will need to ensure it is fixed back to the chasis of the van (not just screwed into the floor) but also ensure that the wheels are chocked, as depending on what your are trying to pull, you may overcome the brakes. Personally would have to say that winching something off the back of the caravan seems like a bad move.
I was thinking of putting a winch on the back of the tow bar on the van I can use this for a few things as well as pulling the caravan to the van, as I have noticed that its awkward getting the van close to the caravan some times. ( I've had my van stuck once or twice also ) and helped others out too so a winch is helpfull for other things too.
I was looking at the bigfoot? jockey wheel mover on ebay, cheap, but as said what would they be like on gravel, or on a slope?
How cheap can you get the other types of movers ??
We are in the same boat as you. We got our first van a few months ago and although its quite light we struggle to park it out our storage yard as the bays are very tight and its uneven gravel so not easy to push either! We have been considering a jocky wheel type but they still seem to be going for up to £200 on ebay plus we have read a lot of comments that they aren't great on anything other than tarmac. So we are coming round to the ideal of having a proper fitted mover to save the clutch on the car. If it helps the best prices we have found so far for one fitted our:
We aren't really sure which one to go for but are thinking maybe the powrtouch as it will run on an 85AH battery (which our van has and would save us the cost of buying a 110AH) and also a 5 yr parts and labour warranty.
Cost is a big issue for us so if anyone know of anything cheaper than the above let me know!
The prices all seem too high for the value of my caravan ( I only paid 1k for every thing a have) so I'll have to keep looking on ebay I guess for a cheap second hand one.
we tried a jockey wheel version a few years ago ,secondhand off ebay , rubbish.
it wouldnt drive the van up the dropped kerb and up the slope to the drive , just spun the wheel constantly.
it was even worse when the ground was wet !!
put it straight back on ebay
We have used a Bigfoot ET jockey wheel version for the past three years now.It has been a god send for us and made it so we can get our caravan round the back of our house, without the mover it would'ent be possible. We have a sloping concrete drive way, i dont expect the bigfoot to pull the caravan up on its self but with a little help at the rear it is fine.
If you are able to use the mover to push the van up a slope it does'ent have a problem.More weight on the front pushing down onto mover avoids any skidding also the bigfoot is kind to the caravan battery. We just use ours for places i can't get the car in.
