I always find the heating in the Sancerre a little under par (never tried it on gas though). Wife always complains I have it turned up too high. You can't win!!
It's just not an option to keep a heater on when the van is unoccupied for many of us, so it never crossed my mind. The van is in storeage when not in use. After saying that, we have never experienced any real problems from not having a heater on. I imagine fluctuation of temperature is the biggest problem (- it is with musical instruments anyway, generally - sends them out of tune). I agree with Jeff's scenario. I imagine heating and cooling would cause condensation.
