Hi, we are going to view a van tomorrow and just wanted to check a couple of things before hand.
The van has a mover fitted, I understand this adds to the weight, does anyone know by how much? Also, we have left it too late to order a damp meter and don't know of anywhere that sells them near us, is there any other way of knowing it's damp?

I bought a B&Q damp meter which was the 'Stanley' brand and cost about £40, but it was not very accurate and had to be returned within a couple of weeks of purchase.
If its just needed for a few days whilst you decide on the purchase of a caravan, then the hired ones are far better quality protometers, and will give a more accurate reading. To buy one of this type new would cost over £100, a bit expensive if its going to be a seldom used tool sitting in the back of a cupboard after your purchase!

Does any one else have a suggestion for a good make of damp meter, it is something I did not realise you could buy, I thought only the traders/dealers had them, it sounds a very useful bit of kit, and of course you can show prospective buyers that your own caravan is dry when you come to sell it on/upgrade.
I have the Protimeter Mini - as shown in the above link. Prior to buying this I hired one from a local tool hire company for c£15.00 a day. This is the model commonly used by Caravan dealers and is much more accurate than the cheap ones.
A caravan engineer recommended buying my own after I found damp in a previous 'van. I googled and bought from the cheapest supplier I found. It WAS expensive, c£200 but a lot less than I lost when selling a damp 'van.
Even our current 'van was found to have damp at its 2nd year service. I was able to use the meter to monitor that the warranty repair, a reseal was effective.
I now regularly check my 'van between services. My son was, also, able to use it when he had problems with a failed house damp proof course installation by Rentokill.
That's what I thought Andy, the van is 1016 unladen, max 1226. Our car is around 1275 max so I think we should be okay? It means we can add around 160 ourselves taking into account the mover.Is that right?
Actually OH isn't too keen on a mover but we'll see hoow it goes if the van's okay
