Well ignore my last post been to a caravan dealer plus store today and the caravan maintainince guy told us not to use silkaflex as we are not removing the whole skylight unit, we are sealing round the edge of the unit on the roof so he sold us something named Silirub Neutral Silicone, he said if we use silkaflex and it doesnt cure the problem then it would be difficult to remove the silkaflex if we need to remove the whole unit, i did explain that the van is 15 years old but he said it is still not worth the risk of a biggger job, so waiting for some dry weather and will give it a go .

My van is a 1990 Swift Corvette. It had bad damp problems when I bought it it. I used the recommended sealants when resealing the skylights - ribbon mastic. I used the recommended bonding sealants on the offside wall which was completely removed along with the insulation foam - Soudal Fix-all. The awning rail and other railings were sealed with ribbon mastic, as per Swifts recommendations. Sikaflex is good, I've used it on a car, but Soudal is the one recommended by Swift.

My rebuilt caravan has been entirely watertight for two years after its overhaul which I did myself using the recommended methods, and I expect it to last another 20 years. For information - I was quoted at £3000 to repair it professionally. I spent £150 on materials, and the rest was my labour, in my spare time. Quite therapeutic, actually.

Good luck OP with your endevours. Incidentally, my original problem with a leaking skylight was caused by a repair using silicon around it instead of it being lifted out and a new mastic seal put in.

Been reading this with much interest. I've re-sealed both roof rails on an old caravan using sikaflex 221. It was ok for a couple of months but over the winter it has split and peeled back, leaving the roof leaking badly. I used the black version of this sealant/adhesive. Can anyone suggest an appropriate product I can use to successfully re-seal the roof? I Will need to run a large bead of sealant along the length of the rail, covering its rubber insert strip completely, ugly I know, but I need to do this to stop the water getting in. Any help or advice very much appreciated!!' I need this van dry for summer 😣

It sounds like you have just run a bead of sealant along the seam without removing the rails, yes? If the roof is leaking that badly you really need to unscrew rails, apply the sealant & screw railing back on. If wood frame is too rotted to take new screws then the job gets even bigger.

If you don't want to do that then worth another try but it is damp under rail then sealant will not stick. If you want to try bodging it again then start on a dry sunny morning, clean rails thoroughly using plenty of meths & apply plenty more PU sealant. Sikaflex 512 is the stuff to use on caravans but I have found cheaper brands of PU sealant work just as well.
