We started caravanning 8 years ago in an old 1988 swift van that we came across by someone elses bad luck.  However after a couple of years we decided to upgrade as the kids were getting bigger, we were really enjoying the caravanning bug and the van was looking jaded. (The front window had water inside it and would have meant a new window).

We purchased a 2003 van in 2008, thinking that would be our investment for a good few years to come.  12months after we bought it we found that we had water coming in round the back window.  (of course being second hand it didnt have a warranty left)

We oversealed the rear of the van but it still managed to find its way in through the window seal, which we then did some work to re-seal.  However when I went in yesterday the towel that I had put down as a precaution was soaked and we have only had one downpour since I put it in. .  The whole rear wall will need removing to dry out

When we were away this summer I got rather wet one night and found that the roof light/sunroof was leaking (bad enough for me to decamp from the bed to the floor!.) However after the recent downpour there is nothing in the bucket I put underneath the skylight so I really dont get what is causing that drip.

My OH is not mr fix it and has kind of buried his head, I have been on the roof with the Capt Tolly's but not really sure if I should run it over every join on the outside of the van.  Up shot is complete restrip is too much for me to handle and so the OH's solution is to 'sell the ****** thing!' that makes me really sad as although we don't get away often I love my caravan and all the joy it brings when I am in it.  Who would buy it anyway?

I am so angry that we bought a duff van when the old one was only 'tatty' and was dry as a bone!! I don't expect answers just needed to get it off my chest

Yes, apply the Captain Tolley's to every seam and watch it run. If it vanishes into a seam you'll have to re-apply it as per the instructions 'till it stops disappearing. You have nothing to lose by doing this.

It would help if you had a damp meter to help trace the source of the leaks.

Aww, thanks.

Sadly we have no 'handy' family, (except my 76yr old Mum, who like me, learned because my Dad wasn't!).

We did put a hose pipe over the suspect places last time we cleaned it but couln't find any leaky areas.   Anyway the wind has died down today so will get the ladders out and throw on some more Capt. Tolly's. Like Al+Mel say, I have nothing to lose.

The leak could be quite a distance from where it surfaces . Capt` Tolleys can be most useful but you really need to persuade hubby to unscrew all the alloy rails and remove them ,(Assuming he is reasonably fit of course), a cheesewire helps get them off without distortion . Use mastik on a roll to re seal as per `WIZARDS` pages in these forums .It really is only a patience and swear box job to stop the leaks . Then let it all dry out and see if there is any rotting timber/wallboard to replace . Unless the damage is severe , this can be done from inside the caravan quite often .

Alan,  its not that he is unfit but he really wouldn't be able to do the job without losing his temper and then ruining something else.

Hes already said he would never be able to remove a rail and replace it in a weekend. He has just lost all interest in the van because it's not something he thinks he can do.  (He won't pay out for someone else to have a go and he won't read this website either!!)

My house is full of unfinished things that he started with good intentions but never actually did properly or finished, it always ends in a raving row and 10yrs later (in some cases) is never finished.

C'est la vie! It's a good job I love him

I am married to one of those His intentions are good but... The jobs he could do easily never get finished, but after 30 years I will keep him a bit longer and hope GS will have a more practical streak. Not holding my breath though.
One of the downsides of marrying an intellectual
