I would like to know if anyone uses pop up tents as pup tents. My 2 month old to me 4 berth won't be big enough in april next year when we are due our new arrival. So I asked my 11 year old what he'd like to do and he said " he'd like to sleep on his own in his own tent" rather that sleep in the awning.
I've looked at the 2 seconds tents at decathlon bbut they do look very flimsy, although they aren't guyed out, do they get firmer when guyed up?? Any reccomendations???
Can't answer your question as I've never personally used a pop-up for anything - you would be better posting this in the 'camping under canvas' section then more tenters will see it.

Yes we have several times in France. We have a 3 man pop-up from Decathlon (only used by two, bit of a fiddle to pack up until you get the hang of it. Pegs out nice and tight and has an inner.
When our kids were teenagers they slept in a small tent with no problems. Kept their gear in there as well. We also had a super porch awning and could get the tent alongside the caravan on hard standing sites if the grass was muddy or sodden !.
Some commercial sites make an extra charge for this.
The Quechua popups from Decathlon are fine, they are well
made, I have slept ok in one a rainstorm & it didn't
leak. They are easier to erect than fold up, that takes a
bit of a knack. They will never blow away if pegged down
but the do flatten out in high winds, ie bend rather than
break.
we tried this with our eldest, we found the tent took up a huge amount of the awning and was a pain to put away each day. It also created alot of condensation. in the end we bought a bigger van.

We bought a Cabanon for our 14yr old and his mate - see my gallery. That one's probably a bit too big for one 11 yr old (says it's a 4 berth) but you can pick up a 2 man pretty cheap on ebay.
We had a cheap pop up (no inner) which leaked in the rain and was too hot when it was sunny.
We have got a 4 berth Quechua 2seconds pop up (with an inner tent) and it works just fine for extra sleeping space when our family want to join us for a weekend away. We also use our Kampa rally 260 awning which gives us extra dining space and seating area during the day.
There is a knack to folding up the pop up tents, but its soon learned, and even i can do it as long as someone holds the carry case open for me to pop it in and keep it tame lol until next time we need to use it!
Ours is quite a large tent as far as pop ups go, but if its just your son who will be using it then a 2 berth model should suit him fine. the only disadvantage of the pop up tents is that they are not as compact folded as a conventional 2 man pup tent would be, and ours is about a metre in diameter, so wont fit under any of the benches or in the wardrobe, but travels flat in the boot of the car, as its only 6cm deep when folded.
