at Chalkie56 as I said the inlaws have one of these awnings, they attached it to the off side of their caravan, they used it to barbeque under and put the clothes airer so it it rained the clothes wouldn't get wet. the main awning is pretty well all used with tables and chairs so the sun canopy awning looks a good alternative if you're in one place for a long time, or if you are in one place for a lttle while in summer and dont want to put up the full awning without panels, which is a good ide BTW. I took them literally 15 minutes to put up whihc really appealed to me. the weight saving of a gazebo appeals too.
Crikey robdawn12 you must go on to generous pitches. If you go on a club pitch you tend to get enough room to get car, Van & awning in that order and nowt else. Well on the pitches I have been to anyway

We got a bargain (75 quid) 2nd hand Dorema Solana sun canopy from a caravan dealer to use in the summer in France. Light and quick to put up and down and ideal for any but very windy conditions.
the site we go to is dartmoor halfway near Bickington, Devon, the pitches are huge and wel seperated with hedges, we use this site every year for our main holiday.
thank you everyone so much for you help and information
Now I know this is slightly off topic, but it's almost Christmas!! Some time ago I asked folk what they did when taking the panels out of the awning. It was more to do with the pegs (i.e. do you leave the pegs in the ground for people to trip over, or take them up every time, therefore making the hole bigger and impossible to re-peg.) A large number of people questioned whether it was wise to take out the panels anyway, especially with the UK weather, and if a wind whips up. So are canopies somehow more stable than awnings with all the panels zipped out. Personally, I would have thought an awning was more stable, but perhaps I'm missing something here.

If you are still asking and with the OP forbearance I can tell you what we do.
Simply leave the base of the panel pegged and concertina the unzipped panel down to the ground finally rolling it within the 'mud-wall' to well protect the windows etc. Then simply carefully step over the roll each time we cross the threshold. Might not work with kids trafficking it their minds away on other things but we cope. The panel can therefore be zipped in when going out and on return quickly furled again. The peg trip hazard being sorted within a roll that is 'hard' to miss seeing.

Thanks for your thoughts. Might just try that one. Now that we have a new puppy in tow, we might be presented with a completely new scenario on sites!!
When I thought about using a full awning as a sun canopy, (with the panels removed), it occurred to me that it would be helpful to have the legs of the awning taped/tied to the upright poles to stop the material flapping about, but this does not seem to be possible.
Perhaps a home made modification, or alteration by an awning company could be done, and this would avoid having to buy a separate sun canopy.
