my question is has anyone stopped on a site with composting toilets? we have booked our hols in aug on a cc site and it says the site has dry composting toilets, just wondered wot there like and what we have to do etc .
Composting toilets are basically a hole over a large drop. You do your business and then sprinkle a scoop of sawdust/compost down the hole!
I personally don't have a problem with using them. Children will need supervising to ensure they don't mess about with the sawdust/compost and to ensure they throw it down the hole correctly. It can be very tempting for young children to chuck the stuff around or tip loads down the hole!
We spent 4 days in a yurt with similar to above. The toilet was designed so that urine and solids were seperated. Solids went into a biodegradeable plastic bag. Once finished sprinkled sawdust into the bag. Both sexes had to sit down otherwise seperation would not work.
Would that be the CC site Crossways at Moreton Dorset? I`ve never stayed there as not being a CC member but good friends of mine have and were not too keen.
We have been to the C&CC site on the other side of the railway line 2008, 2009 and 2010, when I said friends were not to keen I meant the toilets only and the site was OK. Easy train ride to Weymouth and on arrival a short walk to the promenade and beach, not worth the hassle of finding a car park space and the parking charges, love the area. Dorchester, Lulworth Cove, Swanage, Lyme Regis and Monkey World.
We stayed at Crossways last year. The toilets were OK, though OH was not overly impressed!
There was no sprinkling of sawdust or anything, only a notice saying to close the toilet lid after use.
Nice area, but personally would not return to the site as it is a dead zone as far as mobiles go, so no possibility of mobile internet, some pitches are quite close to the railway line, the site roads are quite narrow and twisty (and we have a large van), and the voltage on the EHUs in the area we were on was so dire our fridge kept turning itself off.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
