Hi SMARTBOY, Welcome to the forum, Not had experience towing with BMW,  but a good number of members on here have, and should be along shortly to give you their findings,  in the meantime, I have read some of the findings about the BMW suspension being a bit soft when towing and van dose tend not to ride stable because of the suspension, other members that own and tow with BMWs should have solutions to overcome this.

My neighbours have a X1 2.0d 4 wheel drive, they don't tow but have had no issues with it.

I looked at one myself and was advised to spec the factory towbar which included upgraded fans and run flat tyres etc.  In the end I didn't love it enough to spend the required ££££s!

The 2.3d did well in Practical Caravans towcar awards a few years back.
