Just a thought......What you could say to the chap is that you will put the deposit into an escrow account at the sellers Bank. That is held in the joint names of you and your seller and is only released to the seller, by the Bank, once he has performed certain conditions. e.g delivered the van, you have inspected it to be satisfied that it does accord with his description, he produces his CRiS documents  etc etc. If the seller knows that he can deliver his side of the bargain then he knows that he will get his money released, so should be willing to turn up with the van. What you say to the Bank is that when he pays in a cheque from you for the balance (which shows that you are happy with the deal) then the deposit can be released; if such a cheque is not paid in within, say seven days, (giving the seller enough time to arrive with the van) then the bank returns the deposit to you.

If he is unwilling to deal in this manner then you should, IMO, just assume that all is not as it seems and either walk away or take a gamble.

Phil

Thats a great idea Phil, thanks for that! I'll tell him that & see if it scares him off, you never know just having to show us a pic of his CRIS papers & picture ID might put him off

Here are his last 2 replies to us, let me know what you think....

Yes warranty is transferrable from Elddis
Full service was carried out a couple of months ago including full damp check and caravan certified totally dry
Yes, I have the CRIS registration documents in my name. I also had a CRIS check done and all outstanding finance was paid by the previous owners when I bought it and I have all of the information and verification
Best deals are 10400 delivered, 10325 meet at South Cumbria or North Lancs for example or 10275 collected. All prices include awning and extras mentioned and will require deposit of 400/325/or 275 depending on which delivery/collection option you require and so that I can remove it from sale. If you'd like delivery to Lake district for example I'll be happy to book and pay for an overnight stay on a caravan site for you so you can satisfy yourself everything works as it should ( and I assure you it does)

I then ask for proof of who he is & remind him how far away we are........

Yes no problem with delivery after Sunday but I'm away from the 12th for a week so it will need to be by Tuesday if that's ok, but for some reason thought you were in BIRMINGHAM and not South Glos. I don't suppose you could accommodate the 2nd option and meet part way down? Its over 350 miles for me so it would help a lot. No problem with photographing documents & my driving licence. I'll get the CRIS doc later from the van and send the pics. Look forward to hearing from you.

The Elddis warranty is transferable provided that all services have been undertaken within the required timeframe. You need to check this. Check the date of purchse of the van by the seller and dates of each service. This is the timeframe

1st and 2nd services must be within 60 days of the anniversary of the date of purchase (i.e 60 days before or after that date)

3rd service on or before the anniversary date of purchase

4th service must be within 60 days of the anniversary of the date of purchase (i.e 60 days before or after that date)

5th service on or before the anniversary date of purchase.

Any failure on these times and the warranty is invalid.

Chances are that the damp check did not indicate 100% dry. I would say that would be a miracle. The van will have some damp but within acceptable levels. A brand new van has some damp - its just their nature.

It will always be difficult to sell to or buy from someone from a long distance away. Offereing to pay for a few nights in the Lakes is quite generous and does enable you to check it out. You could even arrange for a local mobile engineer  (email: tyson993 at btinternet.com)  to call in and give it the once over whilst the owner isn't around for extra peace of mind.Having said that its often beneficial to see a van in the owners drive. Don't want to be too cynical but would you buy a van off someone in a layby?

You can do a CRiS check yourself once you have the details (see the link I provided earlier to a note I posted sometime ago.) If that turns out Ok you will have that information by the time you pop off to the lakes for a free holiday. Personally I would ask for Troutbeck - not far from exit 40 of the Motorway - turn left down the A66. Go during the week then you can go to the sellers Bank with the deposit and arrange the escrow account if he insists on a deposit whilst you try it out.

Worst case scenario you get a free couple of days in the Lakes....

Phil

Thanks john but we've been to see that one and did barter with them but they claimed it was a 2009 at the time so thought we we're getting a reasonable deal. It then comes to light that its only a 2008 & they wouldnt budge on the price.

Elddis do this. They produce a new caravan in one year and call it the following year model. So maybe the one you saw was a 2009 model but first bought in 2008.

Our new van was built in 2011 but it is a 2012 model. it is registered as 2011 but is sold as a 2012. They fetch the same price. I don't blame them from not budgeing on price.

As they haven't sold it yet I would offer them a few quid less if the van was a good one. Definitely less hassle than the other deal and far more reliable.

I'd rather have the newer model with more accessories for less money I forgot to say thankyou to Phil for the info on your last post. I've now asked the seller if he has kept it up to date within those time frames. I've had some good advice on here

I'm sure we've paid over the odds but I'm so glad buying a caravan from a dealer is so easy. This sounds so worrying. Hope you get a decent van with the minimum amount of stress!

Yes it would have been much easier! Unfortunately the bailey we were going to see at the dealers sold that morning. We've had a few more long winded emails from the seller telling us all about the service history etc & he's left us his home telephone number & address. Hubby is going up Monday to see it.

Our dealer showed us the service history and the most recent damp report. It was worth paying a little bit extra although when we sat down to do the deal they knocked £500 off the price straight away as it was a promotional weekend. Having looked at ebay etc since there's been very little for sale cheaper than what we paid for the same specification so we feel that we actually got a great deal.

The whole experience was very pleasant and we would certainly go back to that dealer if we wanted to change in the future especially if we were going to spend such a large amount as the OP.
