Our previous bailey ranger came with a new 75ah battery last year. When we had the powrtouch HD mover fitted the engineer said this would be ok for short moves which is all we require and to save our money in terms of getting a bigger battery. It moved the van the 15-20m up our flat drive fine and also in and out of the bay at our storage site. Next week we will be picking up our Bailey Provence which is about 250kg heavier, Do people think it will be ok to stick with the 75ah battery on the new van or will we have to shell out for a 100ah......as this is about £100 we don't want to spend it unless necessary but likewise don't want to get the van home next Saturday and find the battery won't get it on the driveway!
Anyone had any similar experience or can comment ?
Powrtouch recommend a minimum of 85aH, even though a lot of the fitters tell you to get a 110aH. I think this has more to do with the fitters trying to sell you a battery than anything else.
I have no problem moving a 1450kg caravan up a hill for about 100 yards with an 85aH battery after a weekend with no EHU. I really do not see an issue with you continuing with a 75 aH battery being a problem with an extra 250 kg. The caravan is on wheels, the extra effort required to move the extra weight is pretty low by comparison.
I certainly wouldn't be looking to replace the battery unless it fails or you find it goes flat before you have finished with the mover.
I don't recall the exact current figure a mover draws and it will very between one outfit and another, but even at 100 amps, a 75 aH battery will run it for 10-15 minutes under load if not longer.
Thanks Dave, thats a bit more reassurance! The other half has visions of us not been able to get it on the driveway next Saturday. It only takes us a few minutes to back it up the drive so I had hoped the battery would be up to,,,,,,after buying the van we don't have much cash left! Our plan is to get a bigger battery in due course so we can try some CL sites but but would like the current one to last us a few more months! May stick with it and keep our fingers crossed then!
i use an 85 too the difference is how long the battery runs for, not how heavy a van it will push/pull my van is 1350kg and i have used th mover regularly since '08 the amount a mover draws from the battery will depend on terrain/slope/weight of van so the heavier/steeper/rougher the quicker the battery will run down but it won't do that unless you are using the mover to drive you to the next campsite the battery will not run out of juice
Hi dazzer me again I think the 75ah will struggle abit with the new van and leave you nothing left in the tank for emergencies,I was in simular position last year so I got in touch with a company called Alpha batteries in Rochdale they are on the internet I gave them the size of the battery box (Baileys are quite small as a rule)they rang me back within 1/2 an hour and told me they had a 110 ah for £64 so I went over and picked it up but they have a delivery service for a small charge and they give a four year warranty hope this helps.Ian
the difference between batteries is not power but time and 85 will last for 85 hours pulling 1 amp from the battery an 110 will last 110 hours pulling 1 amp if you pull 2 amps the time is halved if you pull 4 amps the time is quartered even if you pull 20 amps the battery can last for 4 hours with an 85 so it depends on how long you are going to use the mover dealers will sell you whatever they can get away with fortunately my dealer know said use the smaller battery which you have already got, and if you have problems then change but in their opinion there would be no problem and guess waht - they were right that is why I go there and have been going for over 10 years honesty is rare in business these days i fear
We used a new 75 amp on our Lunar Lexon 1500 mptlm but found the mover struggled to climb the slope at the side of the house.
Changed to a new Elecsol 110 amp and the mover worked far better
I do find the different answers confusing! Which is the correct fact? 1) A 110 amp battery will move a fixed weight easier than a 85 amp. Or 2) A 110amp battery has the same 'Moving Power' as a 85amp battery but will 'Last' longer? Who has the correct answer?. Cheers John.
------------- Life is our Holiday enjoy it before its time to go back!
As we have found over the years, it is not the ability to move the Van/FC at home or in the storage facility that is important but the ability to do so on the many different surfaces and environments that you will find on a caravan park.
Tight pitches, gravel, mud, slopes, you name and some sites have it. It is not always possible to get the car to the van, especially after prolonged bad weather and then the motor mover comes into its own.
On one UKCS Meet at Bruces Cave CP, our battery just gave up the ghost trying to motor move the van off the wet grass towards the car. Thankfully many willing hands did the job, but since then we have made sure that the 110Ah battery was kept in tip top condition with plenty of power to get us out of any situation.
To spend 800 quid on a motor mover and then skimp on the power to supply it is just plain daft.
Thanks for the above comments. By a bit of luck we were looking on ebay last night and found someone local to us selling a 1 yr old 100ah Numax battery......just went and picked it up for £35 cash
I think 100ah should be more than enough for us and I can now keep the 75ah as a spare just in case. I suppose if we try some CL sites in the future with no hook ups then I can also switch between the two batteries ?
correct lrt's hope the 2nd hand battery is in tip top condition it is the condition that makes the amount of available power the important factor my battery is in its 5th year so it is all eyes open to make sure it is doing the job
Yes I guess there is always a small risk when buying 2nd hand but they seemed a nice family and had 100% feedback on ebay. They were selling a number of caravan bits as had just sold their van and weren't planning to get another. I have popped it on trickle charge tonight just to top it up and will then try it on the van once we collect it on Saturday. If is lasts a couple of years then thats fine ......worse case I will keep the 75ah one topped up as a fallback! Would liked to have gone for a new one but cash is a bit tight at the moment having brought the van and the cost of everything else seeming to continue to rise!
