We are buying a touring caravan to be used only during summer and only in France. Can someone recommend the appropriate breakdown cover and caravan insurance? Policies, which I could find are tailored around using the caravan in the UK.

Many thanks,

If you mean you are keeping caravan in the UK & just towing to France then you can insure caravan as normal but include continental cover which any ins. co. will do. If caravan is being kept permanently in France some UK companies will cover this & somebody will put you right on that.

The breakdown insurance you have with your car can be extended for Europe as well & most will recover car & caravan together back to UK if a local repair cannot be completed promptly. You need to check small print tho as the cheaper ones sometimes do not cover a trailer as well.

The problems come if car is recovered separately while caravan is on site or caravan is hit & disabled but car is undamaged. Most breakdown cover will not recover caravan in these circumstances but some do. There have been a number of threads about this in't past.

I just use my Saga cover which will recover car/caravan together. I think CC or Red Pennant might have better cover but more expensive. Also if you have a large caravan some cover puts on length & weight limits so you need to always check small print carefully.

I suppose its worth pointing out that while folk worry about getting their caravan recovered back to UK if it was damaged in an accident I would think if a caravan was so badly damaged it could not be towed it would be up to caravan insurer as how to proceed.
