hi,

ive been searching for advice online for a while and cant find the answer i need so apologies if this has been covered here before.

i have fitted a 12s socket to my 02 reg car via a w4 split charge relay. the caravan is a 1990 ace rallyman. what i need is a charge to the caravans fridge and battery when driving only.

it appears that the only 12s wires connected at the caravan are the red fridge (pin 6), the white earth (pin 3), and the green permanent live (pin 4).

i am worried the permanent green live will drain the car battery when stationary, if so can this be disconnected?

if i need to put a new wire to the battery via pin 2 does the battery charge via the positive or negative terminal, none of this is mentioned in the instructions i got with the split charge relay.

what about the black fridge earth?

dont want to touch anything i dont need to.

any advice is greatly appreciated.

many thanks,

andy

im alittle consured that you are doing the wiring on your car and asking this question.

you will need to charge via a positive side,

there is little chance in the short time you stop that you will drain either batteries.

the fridge earth wont kick in on pre 1998(black wire)

pre 1998
pin 1 reverse light yellow
pin 2 caravan bat or charger blue
pin 3 earth white
pin 4 constant 12v green
pin 6 fridge feed   red
pin 7 black spare but add this to earth for if you change your van

so this is how you will need your 12s socket wired, but if you change your caravan to post 1998 you will need to change the wiring,

would it drain overnight if i forgot to unhook it?
is a "short time" minutes or hours? sorry just dont want a dead start in the morning and if someone accidentally left a light on would this not lead to a dead start? i want to remove all possibility of this happening. if its ok for say 18 hours then no probs.

the fridge is earthed but not to the 12s. you mean the fridge must be earthed to the 12s?

cheers

If you drive for a while the caravan battery will be charged so if you stop & nothing 12v is switched on in the caravan then the car battery will not get drained. However If you are parking & stay hooked up for an overnight stop its probably a good idea to disconnect plugs from car anyway, so do that but no need during a short stop during your journey.
