As a lot of the older van's only have heaters which run on gas (which is a bit of a waste if your paying for the electricity anyway) and a number don't have blow air heating, I was wondering why more people didn't fit plinth heaters to their vans like this one....
http://www.tabforum.net/archive/index.php/thread-918.html
It's surely just like running a wee fan heater in your van except it tucked down out the way, doesn't take up space and can't be knocked over.
Are there any cons / additional fire risks with fitting a plinth heater in a touring van?

I fitted one in my caravan very similar to the one in the picture,it is very effective and provides instant heat where you want it and with the remote control you can switch it on before you get up in the morning.

Is it powerful enough to use it as your main / only heating source in your van?

There are plinth heaters fitted to Pennine Folding Campers like ours.
We find that even with "a cloth top" you only need them on at one bar and only then for a short time.
That is heating an internal size of 20 feet by 7 feet.

Now to fine one which fits the following criteria:
- Variable power output.
- Thermostat
- Remote controlled (essential for when you wake up in the morning but don't want to get out from under the covers until the van has broken up.
On top of all that I would also use a timer plug so that I could have the option of the heater turning on by itself half an hour before the kids normally wake up.

I fitted ours under the oven, there was a storage space with a downward opening door which i removed & made a surround to fit the space, if i ever sell the van i can remove the heater & replace the door The heater is more than enough to use as your main heat source & the remote is very handy. The only problem that i have found with ours (i don't know if they are all the same) is that when you switch it on using the remote it comes on on the highest setting & you have to turn it down which could cause a tripping problem if you are on a low amp hook up

The Plinth Heater we have in the FC is your bog standard 2 setting type and as for "the remote control", well first up furra widdle, puts the heater on.
The Plinth Heater we had installed when we got a new kitchen in the house last year came with a 3-way setting. High, Low and Frost for if we are away during the winter. It also has the remote control which switches the heater on at the last setting is was at when switched off.
Do be aware that most Plinth Heaters are hard wired in and so having an external timer plug will also mean fitting an easily accessible plug and socket to take the timer plug.

Mine comes on at the high setting but I reset it to one of the lower ones as soon as it starts,to avoid tripping if I'm on a low amp site, the trips on site aren't instantaneous so it hasn't been a problem.
