Can anybody tell me whether it is the car battery or the leisure battery that powers the fridge when the caravan is being towed?

The car battery. AFAIK the leisure battery never powers the fridge. The options are car 12V en route, then 240V or gas when pitched.

Strictly speaking, it's neither. The fridge is powered by a split charge from the car when the engine is running.  So when the engine is switched off, the fridge is not powered - this is to prevent the car battery from going flat when, for example, you stop for a break or when on a ferry.
