Good Evening All,

We are going away next weekend in our new (to us anyway) caravan, we will have 3 adults, 2 teenage girls and 2 Border Collies.  My 17 year old and her boyfriend will be sleeping in an inner tent in the awning and my dogs will also be out there as well - my question is how do I make sure they stay warm enough, they are not fairy dogs by any stretch of the imagination wanting to go out in all weathers, however I am concerned about them getting cold over night.

How do you keep your dogs warm?  (our 1year old will be crated as he is a chewer if left for more than 20 seconds!)

If it's warm enough for your daughter and her boyfriend it should be warm enough for your dogs ;-)

I'd get the dogs to snuggle between daughter and boyfriend to stop any noises ;-) hahaha x

Haha The_Boys, now that is a great idea!!

Have suggested this to dear daughter, if looks could kill I would most certainly be dead now!!  lol

Although my dogs don't mind the cold at all, they are house dogs and I do worry abut them getting too cold.

LOL, oh dear!! That's me in the dog house!

So long as you have some nice warm fleece blankets I'm sure your dogs will be fine. Mind, with this bloomin weather right now, who knows!

Awnings are surprisingly warm, so long as you can cover any draughts.

Enjoy your trip :-)

You and me both!

Thanks, we took it to Cosgrove our local caravan park this weekend for a trial run but had to leave by 6pm tonight as they are expecting the whole place to be flooded by later this evening - a real shame but one night was better than none!

Is there any way you could run a lead from your van and plug in a heater on a low setting?

17 year old and boy friend sleeping together? My how different it was in my day.....which to be fair was last century!

Dogs are far more important than what is going on in the tent. The Dogs should be in the caravan in a nice cosy den close to the fire which should be on all night. If they jump on the bed to snuggle up...so be it. Well that's what we do. Mind it is just me and the little lady.

dogs have a fur coat , when we had a dog , it always slept in the garden in a kennel , and when we got up in the morning it would be running around in the snow , the last thing i would do is sleep with a dog , and that dog lived to about 90 in human years

As long as you make sure the dogs have plenty of layers underneath them, they should be fine.  We always apply the same rules of reflective mats and thickish mattresses etc under our dogs in the tent as we do for oursleves.  They also have a single duvet each, one end of which they lie on, the other end is wrapped over their bodies.  If you're good with clicker training, you could teach them to grab the corner of their blankets to cover themselves up if they feel cold in the night!

Ay, see what the law can do if the dogs are found to be freezing in the night compared to what happens if your daughter gets a chill inside her sleeping bag!. She has a boyfriend to look after her...........or else!!! Anything below 35 degrees (as a rule of thumb) and it may be regarded as cruel. There are other factors to consider e.g weight of dog, amount of fur, hardyness, tyep of sleeping arrangements etc etc but just starting with the temperature issue and this week it has been below 35F in our back garden

Phil.

p.s........we are nearly into May and I still have to have the heater on in the greenhouse. Interesting thought that we gardeners would keep our tomatoes warm but might let the poor dog sleep outside . There are heated dog boxes on the market although I am not sure how you make them stay in them all night
