We are looking to purchase our first caravan, a used one.
We will probably buy from a dealer as we want to buy with confidence ( damp free, warranty etc)
The caravan we like is up for sale at around £8k. Can anyone suggest what sort of discount we should push for. I have been told that dealers have huge margins to play with.
If its on sale at 8K, they have probably paid 6.5 - 7K for it, so by the time they paid for advertising, overheads, servicing/preparation costs, servicing the capital debt and throwing in a warranty (which I presume you`ll be expecting in the price) there won`t be a lot of meat left on the bone.
Don`t be surprised if the dealer digs his heels in - you might get a deal on accessories - as if it is a good clean van he will probably have more buyers than you interested, and probably makes more money on servicing and repairs than selling the things in the first place.
Caravans do sell so as Angus says don't hold your breath. You are more likely to get accessories but ask the dealer what his best price is then when he tells you counter offer
by doubling the amount he knocked off. You will be lucky to get a substantial discount.
Its a bad time of yr to expect discounts. The time to push for a lower prices is at the end of the season, October, November time. All you can do is make them an offer.
As mentioned, you might have more luck with getting stuff like Aquaroll & ehu lead & possibly awning thrown in with purchase price. It would be good for you to get, say £200 worth of extras included but the actual cost to dealer would only be about £100 so more likely than cash discounts at this time of yr.
Dealers aren't giving much away atm, they don't need too, our local dealers vans are flying out the door, two vans we were interested in sold within 24 hours, we looked on a Saturday, went home thought about it went back on the Sunday , and both had a hold sticker in the window.I don't know how much they would give you off, but a friend traded her van in they gave her 5.5k it went up in their forecourt for 7.95k so not much mark up there, not as much as I thought they would put it up for.

Adopt a rescue, rescue dogs make great pets, don't support puppy farms.
The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.

Please don't assume that buying from a dealer means that it will be damp free. You need to check it yourself. It does however mean that if you find any damp you should be covered.
