Think of the logic here, well lack of logic. You say that there is one law for the English, but a different law for the German visiting here who can do what is a criminal offence for an Englishman.

Certainly a lack of logic, but when it comes vehicles visiting the UK short term from other EU countries there is indeed, or appears to be one law for them & one law for us in this particular instance.

The prohibitions on the Hobby caravans you mention relate to UK reg vehicles not foreign reg. here The driver of the overlength 'van was 'advised' to acquire a more suitable vehicle, suggesting he would also have been allowed to continue his journey with existing vehicle if he had wished. It is odd that the other drivers were allowed to continue as well particularly as they may not have been insured. In view of this I'm failing to see how a driver of similar German reg vehicle would have had a problem.

Certainly some interesting points being raised & one hopes this is of some use to the op should his caravan body be over 7mtres.

Thanks to all of you! It is a little bit difficult for me to understand everything at once - because of the language - but I will study Phils comments several times because it seems to me that he knows a lot about Europeen Directives. Finally I am sure that I will not have any problems to visit your wonderful country.

I would like to invite all of you to spend some beautiful holydays in Germany! I am quiet sure that all people in Germany will love the people who drive cars with the steering wheel on the wrong site.

Many Greetings

Thomas

PS: in July our German/English foster child will leave us for we hope he will have a good future with his father in England.

Tentz comments "The prohibitions on the Hobby caravans you mention relate to UK reg vehicles not foreign "

The point I was making was nothing to do with UK or EU drivers...it was simply that, although we may think that anyone with an oversized van does not get pulled up....they do. That is the risk you take. Sometimes you have to leave your van at the side of the road to get a legal vehicle to tow it...sometimes you get a ticking off. The latter should not happen...but it does. I reckon that that simply encourages folk to take a chance and break the law.

As you say, Tentz, probably one law for us and one for them. By the time the prosecution process gets underway the offender may be back home, on the continent, so why bother spending time, and money, chasing someone from overseas. Once they leave our shores the problem has gone. For the UK illegal tower, becasue he is in the Country, the problem remains.

That's life.

At the end of the day, you respect the law and abide by it or you don't. The correct answer for the OP is as I posted. The incorrect answer isn't just break the law you might get away with it. When folk post on here a question I just think they want the correct answer. What they do with that answer is then up to them.

Our friend Corbie has his answer, and, hopefully, his van is the right length for his tug and he can pop over here whever he likes. And welcome

Phil
