Having just had two new tyres fitted at National tyres I asked the fitter if he had inflated them to 54 psi as stated in my Bailey Handbook, he claimed this was too high and had inflated them to 47.5. I believe this is too extreme, am I right? Cheers all! John.

54 is correct. If the tyre fitter says its too high, I would question if he has fitted the correct tyres. Note if you do not abide by the handbook it may invalidate your insurance.

On what basis is it too high?
How on earth would an insurance company know in the event of a claim that the tyre pressures were wrong, I dont see how even they would check them! I'm not saying dont check that they in good condition and inflated properly but to say it would invalidate your insurance is pushing it a bit too far!
I had the same problem when I had new tyres put on my caravan. I couldn't find the answer even from Swift. I only spoke to the girl who answered the phone who just told me that what was in the handbook was correct without even wanting to know what sort of tyres they were. The Camping & Caravanning Club have an information sheet you can download but that didn't help either.
your hand book is correct,you need to check if the tyre is the right tyre size.tyre man is not a caravanner for sure.only if the tyre and size does the pressure change.never known a bailey handbook be wrong.

Not quite the case actually because there is a procedure called inspection and report so if you know and understand how insurance works then your reply is rather narrow minded where insurance is concerned. If a claim involves a third party they will try to avoid any liabilty so proof has to be provided who was negligent. If they find the slightest thing wrong then they have grounds to refuse to pay out so if your tyres are either under inflated or over inflated then this is supporting evidence that the caravan wasn't fit for the road on the grounds of negligence of the driver.
Provided tyre is correct load rating for weight of caravan you will be ok to inflate them to 54psi. Look on tyre sidewall it will give you a maximum pressure for tyre, provided that is a few psi above 54 you will be ok.

Insurance companies look for any reason to refuse payment. Trust me, checking tyre pressures is one of the assessors checks especially on a total loss.
