Hi all. Just thought I’d blog our first trip away with our caravan as it may be of interest to someone! Also, I must say that this is a brilliant site. I have had 2 threads here and was given advice very quickly. I also used the search engine dozens of times.

Well, I recently purchased a Bailey Ranger 470/4 ’99-2000 and booked our first weekend away at a site no more than 35 mins drive. The things that concerned me most were hitching up, driving with the caravan and unhitching and pitching. I’m sure that’s the case with a lot of newbies!

Hitching up went fine and I triple checked everything, and I do mean everything. It was only a weekend for myself, girlfriend and our 5 year old little boy so we didn’t have much to take with us. I left the awning that came with the van at home as I didn’t want any stressful fall-outs with my other half!  So, there wasn’t a whole lot in the van. We packed very light and I think this was my first mistake. Despite reading and re-reading everything I could get my hands on, I misinterpreted the nose weight factor.  I was under the impression that it was essential not to exceed the nose weight but anything under it is fine. This is not logical , I know that now but all I could think was ‘don’t exceed the nose weight!’.  I placed all heavy items close to the axel. Thus the journey down was a little wobbly front to back, a little jerky. We all got there ok though.

When I got to the site, I assumed the EHU post was to be central to the caravan. This made it impossible to drive the van straight onto the site. So I unhitched and pushed the van in. At this point, as has been documented many times as an almost guarantee, a helpful veteran came and helped. Unfortunately my jokey wheel then collapsed. I had not tightened it properly. We rectified this and I got sited and levelled up no problem. Everything else went fine on the pitch. The only minor niggles I had were the following:

I couldn’t work out the easiest way to fill the toilet flush with the materials I had on me. Will bring a 5L bottle and funnel next time.

The early sun flooded in through the bottoms of the tensioned blinds in the morning. I’ve heard the fly blinds being down may help. Any other ideas?

It was VERY cold on Friday night here and I was freezing in the morning and there was a fair bit of steam and condensation on the windows. The helpful man next to me advised putting the window catches on at the first position to assist with airflow and also to keep the electric heater on low throughout the night.

The bed was a little uncomfy for my girlfriend. The owner before last had reupholstered everything in white leather which looks nice but a little uncomfy. We are considering a memory foam topper. Or perhaps buying a roll of foam that has been cut to size from ebay and making a poor man’s duvalay.

The water pump seemed to be chugging away even when we didn’t have the taps on. This didn’t always happen. Also, a couple of times it did nothing when we needed water. Just moving it slightly outside got it going. Maybe need a new one?

The tap leaked a very small amount of water. It seemed to be coming out of the swivel area. The joins?

That’s about it.  Really enjoyed ourselves and looking forward to going away next weekend. Seems like a lot of niggles but not really. These are things that I plan to eliminate for next time.  I reckon we will be away maybe twice a month.

Thanks again for all contributors to this site!

Richard

Hi sounds like you have most things covered and know how you can rectify the niggles as you put it.
I would certainly leave the heating on low at night when it's as cold as it has been latetly.

I would get a memory foam topper, look on ebay they aren't too bad to buy on there.
Sounds like the tap wants a new seal but that should be easy for you to do.

Sometimes we find our water pump comeson for a few seconds when the water isn't being used if we think about it we switch the pump off at night.

The light coming under the blinds can be shut out by closing the fly blinds but in our last van we cut some foam pipe insolation to size, then cut it down the side and slid it on the bottom of the blind at night.

Hope you carry on enjoying your trips, I'm sure you will.

The water pump will go if water is lost from the pipes to the taps, we had this last year when one of the o rings on the water connection was degraded then failed. The result was that water was escaping out and the pump kept on running to refill the pipes.

a new o ring and it's not happened since.

I hate when people start topics and then never reply! Now it seems I am one of them! Apologies, I really thought I had repleid back, I even knew what I had said! Weird.

Thanks for the hints and tips. Janx, yes we may get  a topper very soon or make a ghetto duvalay. Thanks for the great tip regarding the foam pipes on the blinds at night, I reckon that will really work. And yes, hopefully a new seal is all that is required for the tap, dont fancy fitting a new tap.

Tricky, I will have a better idea of what is going on with the water pump when I head off this weekend. You may well be right and a new O ring may be required.

Thanks again for all the help and advice offered!

We took my Sis's new-to her caravan for a short break, whilst it was still under the three months warranty.

My sis had problems with her pump, it didn't seem long enough for the water barrel and kept pumping when it wasn't empty but not far enough down the barrel. Then on closer inspection there was a manky carbon filter, which she just pulled off and connected up without it, which worked much better... and no little black bits in the water!

The system hadn't been puricleaned as the dealer said. However we managed to survive.

The bathroom sink was a pop up one, when tipped, the water just came out at the bottom and flooded all over the loo. On pulling it off, we found it absoultely full of debris, including a bar of manky soap and a soap dish, and it was black with mould. After we had cleaned that out (not pleasant) it worked fine.

And the bathroom tap needs replacing, it's oozing out from a crack between the two tap mixer heads.

Not too bad really, but it just goes to show that you need to try these things out somewhere local if you can, before heading off into the big wilds!

Welcome to the site and hope you enjoy your new van. Don't forget to post some pics when you get time.

As with everything it some gets second nature and once you have ironed out all of the niggles you can then relaz and enjoy the hobby more.

You never stop learning and don't forget, we have all done the same and someone will always know the answer to your problems. Thank goodness for UK Campsite hehe.

Your taps.  I found that my taps weren`t connected right.  (My fault cos I`m a fiddler)  When I removed them, they operate on a 3 start thread system which when correctly located gives  less than half a turn from "off" to "full on" . . . .If they, or one of `em is set on the wrong thread, you`ll get drips.  It`s easy enough to fix, fellas love this sort of stuff.  And you will do.  And - you`ll impress her and your little one heh heh!

Have a good one!
