Hi. We're tent campers but my oh really fancies a caravan.
We've been offered a very old monza 1200d for £100.
And to be honest I really don't think it's worth it.
The van is approx 1979 and looks like its been used as a stable for the past ten yrs. it's very very dirty inside.
I personally think it needs completely ripping out and refitting.
I'm no novice to DIY and work for a builders merchant, so materials are easy to come by. The Question is...... How difficult is it to refit and really is it worth it ???

September 27th. I'm going away. Don't care where. Just going!!!!

If its really that bad, I'd walk away.

There are vans with potential around, you will never get back what you put into it with this one.

From what I have read on here over time a Monza well cared for can be damp free and a good van for many years.  But I'm picking up on the fact that you say you are 'no novice to diy' and have great access to materials, so in my limited experience I feel that there are much better bargains out there to be had for you! Perhaps not for £100 though

You can find similar 80s Monzas on ebay in good working order for £400 so might be a better bet. Check the running gear but if it has not moved for 10yrs it may be all rusted up. You would certainly have to replace tyres & brakes/hubs would need stripping & servicing before serious use. Look all around inside of caravan & in corners for signs of damp & floor should be solid not spongy.

If interior fittings are only dirty they will clean up easy enough, if they are badly damaged then not worth it. Windows should not be cracked & catches should work. Rear lights may well be rusted up & need replacing, not difficult & cheap light clusters are only a few quid each.

If you think its ok offer him £25 & tell him it would cost him more than that for scrappie to take it away.

Thanks for all the advice guys. We're way up in the highlands so choice is extremely limited. I have found other vans on eBay etc, however, they're hundreds of miles away. The main reason we want a caravan is for our 2 yr old. She has type 1 diabetes and we've found that her blood glucose levels fall dramatically in the tent. It could simply be excitement but till we try a caravan we'll never know.
I have emailed the guy with the monza and told him we can come to an " arrangement ". But I think I'll use it for a shed. Or a project to gain caravan experience.

would have to agree with other posts, and leave the old monza where it is, plenty of good, older cheapies about to try tin tenting in, that wouldn't take anywhere near as much work or effort to get usable.

like you we were originally canvas campers but as we are now both into our 50's, OH thought we were getting too old to be sleeping on the floor ,so we got our 1st tin tent, she's an avondale orestes, 2 berth c 1992, we've had her 2 years now , she gets regular use and she only cost us £300 off fleabay.

now we wonder how we ever managed in a tent

no tin tent outings booked as yet ,just another cruise in Sept' booked so far
