We have had the same problem as many people seem to have with our Truma Ultraheat heater in our Bailey Range 450/2, year 2000. We have today bought a remote sensor which we have plugged in but still have the same problem. We are sure the jack plug is pushed in as far as it goes. Is there anything else we should be doing?
The problem we have is that the heater will warm up when used on the electrics but it then goes off and won't come back on. We got the remote sensor from a local caravan dealer as we need to get the problem sorted before we go away next weekend if possible. It looks exactly the same as the one for sale on Ebay.
I see, well if the temperature control is at fault then it will go off and be slow coming back on, but it will come back on.
If however it goes off and does not come back on, then the likely problem is one of the limit thermostats is faulty, or even the control board itself, but limit stats are favourite.
It will likely be only one but both should be replaced as the fire needs to come out to gain access.
Regards the remote thermostat, this is a standing joke with me, I've made the original short version since 2004, only one poor copy is available and only since 2007, that's Truma's!
Thanks for the advice. I switched it on yesterday with it set at 1000 watt and it stayed on until we switched it off. Will have to go with that until after our holiday but if we have problems on holiday, will have to think about changing the limit thermostats. Is this something that needs to be done by a professional?
We bought the caravan two years ago and the board was changed when we bought it as the heater wasn't working when we got it home so hopefully it won't be that. We bought the remote thermostat from Salop Caravans so not sure if that would be one of yours or made by someone else?
The clue with the limit stats is they develop minds of their own and switch themselves off and on at will. It is certainly not because they reach their set temperature and switch off, the lower one being 125C, the higher 175C and only there to monitor the gas fires flue temperature!
One of the main ways of them switching back on is towing the van? this vibrating them and they switch on, or indeed off!...this might explain you having the control board changed when it was the stats that were actually causing the problem when you bought the van?
In fact, I strongly believe it is vibration from out of balance wheels on caravans that wrecks them in the first place!
I'll also add, you can test them all day long and if their 'on' they check out perfect, only way to be sure is to change them
As for who changes them, the gas fire needs to come out, this should be done by a competent person.
Actual time to change is 40 minutes, but there is obviously a little more time involved overall.
It does look like this may be something we will have to get done soon. We are based in the West Midlands. Is there someone you could recommend to do this job or is it something you could do? If so, could we get a quote for this?
