I have been out and about this week and noticed several vans with their rooflights open. I have tried to attract the drivers attention (where possible)....is this getting to be a more common problem or are people forgetting to close them? On A500 yesterday for 40 ish miles and saw 4 and it was pouring with rain too! Some were new vans.

We never had a problem with ours and I just wonder if this is an issue with newer vans which I need to watch for when we finally find what we are looking for!

I did this on my very first outing many years ago and have never done it again... until last week! It was the large Heki over the fixed bed that opened while we were driving. Luckily this rooflight is hinged along the length of the van so put up a smaller surface area. We were not flashed at until we were on the A1 so have no idea how long it was up, but it appears to have suffered no lasting damage.

How it happened? I have no idea. I would love to think that it was a malfunction in both catches at the same time and not down to me losing by marbles and forgetting to check before setting off. Sadly I do believe that it was the latter.

I suppose it is something that can be forgotten quite easily but what we do is have a routine whereby whilst I am emptying the chemical toilet waste tank, waste water and packing everything else away my wife does all the ckecking and closing of any skylights, window blinds and anything else inside the caravan. That way we don't get in each others way and it is a routine that has worked well for us. I always double check after we have hitched up because I don't like to take anything for granted and after all we are only human and can all make mistakes. Up to now I have never found any skylights left open before departure but I always best to make sure as there's a first time for everything.
