Hi everyone, We are thinking of buying a caravan, it will have to go into storage. I have a few questions, Why do so many people not have vans for long? they seem to trade them in quick? And do people actually use the showers in the vans or is this a big No No because of damp etc? Thank you for your help.

These sort of questions suggests to me that you have been reading too much internet. If you are confused now prepare to be even further confused by the answers that you will receive on this thread.
People change caravans because they want to. Much like cars or tents, their needs change and another model will suit better. If you get the right one first then change not needed. As for showers it's there, you paid for it, use it. Many prefer the on site facilities so they use them. Same with toilets. How you use you caravan is up to you. Don't worry about what others are up to.

We have tended not to use the shower in our van and use the site one's. The toilet is used over night or if weather is bad or being lazy....
As for the change of van we have un expectedly fallen in to this category. Our first van was a 2 berth old lunar clubman, lovely little van and gave us lot's of good times but we wanted to also take our cats with us and go away at Christmas so changed it for a twin dinette. We are not looking at changing that again and get one with a fixed bed, but this is down to a back issue I have been left with since an accident on the motor way (not my fault) and now lying on bed's with different bits make it uncomfortable for my back. But this time we are hoping the one we get will be the last for a while.
This is our 3rd year with our 2001 Swift caravan and we love it. Did have a look round a couple of months ago to see what there was on the market (I just like looking at caravans) but to be honest could not find a caravan that we liked or was in as good a condition as ours is in (apart from new ones which are out of our price range).
We use our shower in the caravan I find that there is enough hot water for a decent shower but usually wash my hair seperately after water has heated up again, just because I hate washing my hair with cold water.
We also keep our van in storage and find this no problem at all. We usually bring it home at begining of season to check it over and fill it with food, clothes etc. Then every other time we go away just load up the car and transfer it to caravan at storage site and away we go.
Good luck and I hope you find a caravan that suits you, please let us all know what you decide on.

We've been through a few vans, for various reasons, one to see if we liked it, another for an upgrade, made a mistake on the layout so changed it, we are currently looking for another van ( fixed bed) because OH has a disability and needs some more comfort, this one will have to last us for years, we always use our shower ( well I do OH he likes site facilities) , some people change their vans because they like to upgrade the age ect it all depends on the individual.
If you're planning on getting a van to keep for a long time, find the layout that suits you best, thats a big factor in getting it right :)

The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.
We bought quite an old van to start with to see if we were comfortable towing, as neither of us had done this before.
We loved it, so upgraded to our current caravan which has a more suitable layout for us.
If we are on a site with facilities we use their showers, but we do use a few none facility sites so obviously use our own shower then. The only reason we use the sites, is so I can have a longer shower and wash my hair at the same time. We generally always use our van toilet.
Relax about what everybody else does - Im sure you'll get very conflicting views!!
Have fun - I have a sign in my window which OH bought me "Get a life - Get a Caravan"

We always use the shower in our van, bringing a slightly damp toddler across a large field in the pouring rain is not my idea of fun - but taking a shower in a nice warm van with a nice clean shower mat to step on and a nice big end washroom to get dressed in is lovely. We wouldn't change our van, the layout is perfect for us but quite rare (for the weight).I guess some people aren't so lucky to find the right van first time!
Happy Camping!
We searched for our caravan for a year. During that time we looked at tons of them so we had a good idea which would work for us best. After deciding that, we then needed to set a budget. Then we thought about what accessories we wanted /hoped would come with it. So we ended up with a twin dinette (the back end closes off with a wooden door), side bathroom, with porch awning & motor mover.
I use the toilet most of the time as I prefer mine to communal facilities and we use the shower if we're on a rally with no facilities although I use the bathroom sink for a quick freshen up and to clean my teeth all the time.
Our caravan is 10 years old already but we're hoping it will last many years and plan to get it serviced every year to keep it going.
Thank you all for your comments on this subject, and am pleased that they were all optimistic and good, we have decided on the layout, fixed bed 4 birth, stable door, table that comes out, sky lights, ha ha I could go on and on, def want a mover thingy! Am geting very excited now, just need to upgrade the motor car, yeah thats another thing! But am raring to go! With any luck we should be sorted before September, and I will no doubt be on here chewing your ears off! Cheers all, and happy tin tenting to you all. x
Can I butt in and ask a quickie? We have a shower in our van, but I told the OH not to use it as the water would run out fast and you'd end up covered in soap with no water.
How long can you run a shower from a standard water barrel?
We bought our first caravan in February and certainly no thoughts of w change. I use the shower to wash the children and for the occasional shower. It came in handy at our last site where the boiler broke and all the showers were freezing!
