Hi all as you can see I'm brand spanking new here :-) Nice to meet you all. I am currently a tent camper and have been for the last 20 years. But now my partner and I have decided to step up to caravanning as we have 2 young children in tow we just thought the extra comfort might help.

OK I know I'm going over very well trodden ground here as I can't seem to find a solid answer to my question anywhere.

I am resigned to the fact that I need to do the B+E test as I only arrived in country in 1999 so I'm OK with that NOT the £115 for the honour though.

Do I need to do a training course prior to or can I just take the test???

Although I'm am looking into doing a training course anyway as being unfamiliar with towing a unit so big I just want to make sure I'm safe for my families sake.

Does anybody know of a reputable training company in the Warrington (North West) U.K area and also where I would need to go for the test?

Cheers all sorry it's a bit long winded.

Look forward to your responses

Haich

You can drive a car and caravan combo up to 3500 kg combined weight with several other caveats on a post 1997 licence. You only need the B and E if you want a bigger outfit.

As category B but with a trailer weighing more than 750 kg. The total weight of the vehicle and the trailer together can’t weigh more than 3,500 kg. The weight of the trailer, when fully loaded, can’t weigh more than the unladen weight of the vehicle.

Our relatives came from South Africa and automatically got the B+E. However they obtained their licences in SA in the seventies.

Hi all sorry for the confusion yes I vaguely understand the weights as I have a Sedona and I need a 4 berth van at least I will do the test so theres no doubt if I'm legal or not.

My question was do I need to do a course prior to the test or can I just take the test?

Cheers all for your feedback

yes you can take your test without going on any course, same as lorry drivers, but strongly recommend you take the course as then you will be taught correctly and have a better chance of passing 1st time.even if you have been driving for years you will have got into bad habbits without even knowing,i take refresher coures every 5 years just to make sure i am up to scratch. all the best.
