Hi does anybody know if we need to change our sky dish, we have an old box in the van at the minute but we have been given a sky+ box which records etc. Will our old dish pick up the signal or do we need to get a new one. We have tried the new box but it would not pick up any signal. Many thanks
Hi PB07 Not sure about the dish but you will need a suitable LNB with twin co-ax cable, I'm sure someone with a bit more knowledge will put you in the know .Regards Graham
As above, if you don't have a Sky+ subscription then none of the Sky+ features of the box will work. Note also that a standard Sky remote won't operate a Sky+ box properly.
If you do decide to go with the Sky+ subscription, the cheapest option is probably a quad LNB (actually cheaper on eBay than twin LNBs), and just use 2 out of the 4 connections on it.
You don't need to change the LNB on your old dish. A single connection cable is OK. However you won't be able to record a program when watching another. We change our Sky+ box to 1 feed from 2 feeds when we caravan & then change it back when home. We have not yet tried leaving the 2 feeds in place so you actually may not need to alter the feeds - just connect to feed 1.
Your old dish should be fine we have never changed from an OLD domestic dish in the last 8 years.
We use compass, satfinder & check pitch for a clear sight to satellite.
As I said above, simply search for "quad LNB" - they cost around £7. And then get 2 lengths of Satellite grade cable (or you can get what is called "shotgun" coax which is 2 separate cables joined together fig-of-8 style) and 4 f-plugs (which just screw onto the cable - no special tools required).
But there is no point if you are not planning on paying for a Sky+ subscription.
problem is with sky plus box.when i bought it i was told it could record for many hours.great i thought.what he did not tell me is you MUST have a sky package or you will have to pay £10 per month to record.i now have sky+box and twin shotgun cable and quad LNB.still not able to record as i will not pay £10 for it.we do have sky broadband plus at home but this is not enough to cover recording.any clues or info please Francais?
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

You have two choices pay Sky £10.50 a month (I think that is what is now) or buy a Freesat HD PVR for about £200, it will pay for itself in less than two years compared to Sky which would be ongoing. Only thing you won't get the few FTV or subscription channels.

thanks,i still think it wrong to make us pay for just recording when we pay for sky broadband each month.can see your point though.

Hi Michael.
By some quirk of events, for the last 7 years, my Sky+ box has been able to record and give full Sky+ functionality, even though I have never subscribed to Sky, and the viewing card in the Sky+ box was apparently deactivated, so only allows the FTV/FTA channels.
Anyway that aside, for camping duties I use a Humax Foxsat PVR which works a treat, especially in the South of France, when getting line of sight to the UK satellite is not always possible, the Humax will happily tune into most other satellites should the need arise.
Also the Humax will let you watch recorded program's without having a satellite signal, in contrast the Sky+ will not let you view recorded Sky program's when there is no Sky satellite signal, which is a bit of a cheek considering that you are paying for those program's recorded or not.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
