Hi, I've just bought an old Fleetwood Colchester 1500. It looks in reasonable nick but how would I know? I've never had a caravan before. Any suggestions about what I should look out for? I will need to get a towbar fitted on my Volvo S40. Any ideas about buying a good second hand towbar with electrics etc?
Is there anything I should definitely check before taking it out on a wee trip? Tyres obviously. What else?
I'm a total novice. Never towed a caravan before. Help!
Welcome to UKCS and congratulations on your first van!!
Not sure on the mechanics of the van but I'm pretty sure brakes etc. will need checking.
Inside check for leaks/damp (if you haven't already), hook it up and make sure everything works okay.
There's advice on here about towing and there are courses available too, you will need to find out about weights and loading etc.
Sorry, I'm not very technical!!
Enjoy your new purchase.
------------- Are you sure you've read the instructions?
Definately hitch it up and check all works. When I got mine it was in storage and I just looked at everything without checking. They didn't even have a battery in it and didn't check 12v either. ended up:
Fridge didn't work.
Household charger 'wired' into the caravan electrics and didn't work.
All electrics by charger botched.
I've slowly got everything working and now really pleased with the caravan but just wish the sellers had been honest.
