My last aerial has died, it had three suckers and fit outside (I just placed it on the roof and pointed it in the right direction). It was very effective and I have recommended them to other people. However, with them being spikey, mine got damaged and doesn't work.
I wondered about getting one of the Avtex range, simply because they have less spikes!!
Here's the question. The Avtex description is:
Features:Avtex STH1000 20dB Digital TV Antenna Specifically designed for digital tv reception & can be powered by the antenna option on your set top box or via the 12v DC power cord provided.
What does 'powered by the antenna option mean? I don't have a set top box, just a little DVB-T TV/DVD player. Does this mean it's powered from the tv when you plug it in? I only use the tv when on EHU as I have no 12v plug in the caravan.
So now I'm confused. I could buy another spikey type, but they are difficult to store in my teeny tiny van without damaging them!
Why not try Duane Bateson at duane at avtex.uk.com (use the proper "at" sign for the email address!). He is at Avtex and I have found him to be really helpful

Firstly, there is no such thing as a digital aerial as many have said on here before but regarding your question I think that what they are trying to explain is that as the set top box is powered by 240 volt mains you can either power the aerial via a mains supply through the box itself or directly by 12 volt direct to the TV without the aid of a top box. In other words it's adaptable by either 240 volts mains or 12 volt with the adaptable power cord which is provided. I don't know if you already have one but you may also need a power pack too to increase the signal reception in certain areas.
We us a vision pluse aerial it goes on a poll by the jokey wheel, we don't have a set top box we have freeview built onto our tv and have found it to be very good, we live in the welsh valleys so have lots of big mountains all around us and never have a problem with it.
Some TV's and STB's can output 12V through their aerial sockets to power an aerial amplifier. Not all do so it will be in the setup menu if applicable. You certainly would not put 240V up an aerial cable. Regarding your existing aerial one missing piece would not stop it working but may change its performance.
Ah ha, what was as clear as mud is now as clear as water! Many thanks for all your help. I went onto the Avtex site and downloaded the pdf instructions. You can simply plug the aerial into the tv just like a normal aerial.
Off to check out the prices for the vision plus, although I don't want to have faff about with sticking things on poles.
My last aerial really has died. I checked with someone else's aerial just to see if it was the tv. It's not the tv, I haven't got a signal where others have been getting one for quite a whiley!

Aerials don't normally die, there's nothing to go wrong. What can happen, particularly with a mobile aerial is that the cable connection at the aerial junction box can become dislodged. The connection just needs to be re-made making sure there is no stray wire from the braiding shorting out the central core.
