We do not have built in aerial

We have a very old ariel the type with centre bar and shorter bars sticking out either side (as you can tell I am not technical when it comes to ariels)

We also have a sat dish.  This I thought was going to be the answer to our prayers but isn't.

We have a free sat box and the normal TV.

My question is, what do you suggest as the best type of ariel.  My husband spends lots of time trying to get a signal and when he does, some stations break up, lots you cannot even get and sometimes you'll get them one night and they have gone the next night.

As this ariel is very old could that be the problem?

Any advice would be welcome

#Was having the same problems with the old spiky thing myself! It worked very well for three years, then started dropping to bits. Just bought this which I'm hoping will work on a trip away next week. Will let you know.

Have you tried putting it up on the roof? They work better there.

I am a little confused by your post as you refer to a normal tv and a freesat box. Freesat will only work off a sat dish so I dont understand why you think an old aerial is your problem. Digital TV (freeview) must be received through a freeview tuner which if you dont have built into your tv then you will need a freeview box.
If you go down the freeview route then we have found that a standard bidirectional aerial has always been up to the job.

Hi we use Bog Standard TV ariel you can get from ASDA £19.98 with all the bits etc and never have any problems with this.

Digital TV has very much become similar to Satellite TV where the Dish/Ariel has to point in specific direction to get good picture quality, not to mention the Horizontal and vertical alignments etc.

We just look to see where house are pointing when entering the site and point in a similar direction, with very little re-alignment to do and routinely get 110 - 130 stations tuned including radio etc.

Our previous ariel was archaic held together with Gaffer tape and this also worked wonders until it got run over. A good mast is need we have 3x 4ft poles which are mounted to the Jockey wheel, and the ariel attached at the top..

Was told ages ago not to bother with all the posher ones and those with amplifiers in its not worth it and thats from a TV engineer.

Hope this helps

I got a cheapo standard type aerial with pole for the caravan.  Got an extension, in case of poor reception.  It`s fine.sticks up about 2 or 3 feet above roof level.  I drop it down a bit in a gale. . .

Thank you all for your replies.

Sorry going off the point, yes do realise have to have as free sat box for the dish and yes we have one.  What I meant to say was, you still often have a problem locating the sat, especially if trees are around.

Hubby has now gone for the Avtex as suggested by Jax as someone else we know has one and they reckon they can always get a picture.

The reviews are good on Amazon. Hope mine is ok next week, I think I might be spending a large amount of time in the van if it doesn't stop raining!
