Our fridge is less than a year old and is a Thetford double door fridge. Even since day one, if you put stuff in the fridge and then open the door later it smells like an old f**t!
The fridge gets quite cold etc and my wife cleans it out thoroughly, but the odour persists no matter what. When the caravan is stored the fridge doors are left open.
Can any one recommend anything? Thanks.

Seeing as no one has answered ,they reccommend to clean all fridges with a solution of bi-carbonate of soda, also if you have a drain hole to take the excess water when it defrosts is it blocked with food like a pea or something.

i clean ours with a strong anti bacterial spray.if its really strong there could be a leak on the pipes at the rear,a strong ammoia smell.if so (not good) and it needs checking before you use it again.if you have spilt milk at the door the smell later is really awful.

Check the drain pipe at the back of the fridge and the drain container behind the lower vent on the outside of the 'van. If it is anything like mine the drain container overflows and causes a musty smell behind the fridge. I have now fitted a larger container and make sure I empty it before packing away and moving caravan. It is not something that should need to be done if it was designed correctly in the first instance but I live with it. On the other had you could have a dead rat behind the fridge (only kidding!).

I repair domestic appliances and the most common reason is milk being spilt in the door, it runs under the shelf and behind the door seal under the shelf, so check that this is clean

Basically you have to give it all a thorough clean so take out any removable shelves first and give them a soak in water with washing up liquid, rinse off with clear water, dry well then spray with some nice smelling anti-bactrial cleaner. Clean out the fridge itself with a solution of bicarbonate of soda as recommended in your handbook but smells will linger on porous materials such as the surrounding rubber on the fridge door. Avoid using bleach on the rubber but what I usually use is 'Dri-Pak liquid soda crystals then work in between the rubber with a soft toothbrusk which will remove any congealed grease and stubborn stains. Finally just wipe over with clear water and you should end up with a completely clean fridge. We always thoroughly clean our caravan fridge every twelve months whether it smells or not because it helps to keep germs at bay where food and drink is stored. I have provided a link to the soda crystals merely for photo reasons but don't pay this price as you can sometimes buy it in shops for less than £1.50 if you shop around.

On a similar tack- I left the freezer door closed in the caravan fridge-I had also left the ice cube tray full of water. bad thing to do as the door seal went really mouldy Does anyone have a good way of getting rid of the black marks mould leaves behind on the rubber door seal? I've tried most of my kitchen cleaners except bleach - I am a bit worried that bleach might cause the rubber to perish.
