had a quote for £1500 to repair our van , mainly plastics , filling & paint and labour but that was before i noticed 2 areas of light creasing in the front panel and in the offside wall between lounge window and roof . spoke to the workshop who supplied the quote when i noticed the other damage ( first time the van had been dry and clean since the accident ) and they say its beyond their capability to repair and will need to go to bailey IF the insurance dont deem it uneconomical to repair .
waiting for supplying dealer to call back re, a home visit to quote for repair as it is now deemed unsafe to tow by workshop due to a big question mark over rigidity in front corner where van was hit.
has anyone had a succesful claim on an new for old policy and what was the time frame for being sorted ? i know all companies deal at a different pace but some sort of idea how long to get sorted would be good.
can really do without all the stress and hassle of this particularly as we did nothing wrong and were hit by a lane changer who only saw the rear of our car and not the 7metre long white box attached to the back of it

my sister had a jack knife with a 1997 eldis a couple of years ago. massive damage to front of caravan (and car)-had a whole new front ,axle etc etc . cost much more than van was worth but they did a great job .

saga caravan insurance i think.

dont let them rush you into writing it off..

good luck with it

If it's insured new for old, I'd rather have it written off & either have a new van delivered or  a cheque for it's relacement cost sent in the post & I'd be pushing the insurance assessor as much as I could get away with to declare it a write off because a recorded major repair on the CHRiS register would surely devalue it.

I may be on my own on this one but, on that basis I certainly wouldn't want a badly damaged caravan repaired if it was possible to have it written off.

I think you will find that if you have new for old cover, unless the repair costs are in excess of 75/80% of the cost of a new van the Insurers will go for a repair

You surprise me there old chap, considering they seem to write vehicles off with what looks like minor damage I expected the same with caravans.

im hoping for a write off too , supplying dealer has photos of the damage and are liasing with Bailey as to an estimate to repair.
heard stories of a hail damaged roof / front panel being around £4500 and £1700 for a side panel. as the van is only worth around 10k could be borderline , plus any damage to the structure once panels are removed will bump cost up.

Best of luck with your claim, I'd certainly prefer it to be written off were it ours. Perhaps you'd let us know how you get on.

still dealing with my no fault accident from may!

it took about 2 weeks to get quotes sorted and for them to decide it was a write off.......although that said we had an estimate in only 2 days from repairer.......the insurance based it on about 60% of the current value for write off purposes.

we did get new for old back as a cheque about 8 weeks from date of crash to get the payment.

in our case we were insured for £14,500 new for old. they valued van at £8,500. Glasses valued it at £9,500.

Repair cost was £12,000, but we still had to go through the motions to establish this.

Hang in there, and make sure you get all your losses covered via legal as well. Thats the bit i am waiting for....had some, but not all as yet.
