I know I've had loads of useful info from members before so I thought I would ask for your views on a unit I have seen that will update my 20 year old van.
We've looked at this Sterling van on the web site and just been for a touch and feel. it looks great but I wondered if anyone had any views that might help us out before we buy.
We don't have a sterling Eccles jewel , but we do have a 2008 swift challenger same company same layout ect, and have to say really very pleased, with everything, this is our second swift our previous was a 2006 challenger, not the same layout but again, very pleased with the build quality ect.
------------- "I'm a fool for my dogs"
Adopt a rescue, rescue dogs make great pets, don't support puppy farms.
The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.
We have a Sterling Eccles Amber and it is wonderful. The layout is great and has good quality fittings. My brother in law worked for Sterling/Swift in Cambridge and they were always seen as high quality vans and most of them were sold to Europe as they were such high spec.
------------- Anyone who says something is foolproof hasn't met a determined fool!
We have a Sterling Eccles Opal 2008. (Fixed Bed) I am pleased with the 'van but I have to agree with my wife that the kitchen layout and storage is pretty poor. On the negative side, there is a distinct lack of cupboard space and worktop area at the sink - the clip on draining board takes up a lot of worktop space and there's not much there in the first place. I believe it is possible to fit a fold away worktop extension at the door.
If you intend to use the front bunks they are only really suitable for kids up to around age 11 - my grandson is 11 and needs a stool with cushion at the door for his feet which stick over the end of the bed.
Also the space to get around the end of the fixed bed is pretty tight and neither Mrs Oxter nor I are of wide proportions. The available space at the bedside is tight for accessing the two cupboards under the wardrobes, and the alcoves by the bed are pretty useless. The bed tends to fall back down from the raised position when your head is underneath.
On the plus side it's a well built 'van with a nice shower room and toilet. Don't let the above points put you off but it's as well to be aware of my reservations.
As a matter of interest, would you mind disclosing the asking price from the dealer?
Thanks for the input, we have gone ahead and are waiting for the new van to be serviced so that we can collect it in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to trying it out but it may have to wait 'cos I am geting a new hip later this month.
Any comforting stories about new hips greatly appreciated because I am getting a bit jittery.
The caravan is great, just wish we could get out more but work and decorating come first (just).
The new hip is great too, in to Raigmore on the Wednesday at 0730, operation at 0930, lunch at 1200. Thursday out of bed to the loo and across the ward. Friday up and down a flight of stairs and declared fit to leave. Very sore at first and looking like I had been facing West Indian fast bowlers but by Christmas I was walking without crutches and back to work in January. Best thing I've had done and it's great to be able to get my socks on again!!!
Only an adopted teucher, actually a Tyke on missionary work!
Why do I need to ask OH it's usualy me doing the cooking and chores and I think the kitchen is great 'cos it's so compact I can't make too much mess. Still haven't worked out the best place for everything buut thats another story because nothing ever stays where I put it.
Ok - if that's a Yorkie we are down that way right now.
And it's freezin' cold. Hail and sun today. Previously wind but generally like winter. What a climate. We are usually in France just now. This was a big mistake !
Well we were at Brawby. You'll find it on this site under site search name. Nice place NE of york. Now in co. Durham near Sedgefield. But sorry we have only really had one season all fortnight and it ain't summer
