hi, my van is 1300kg, my towball limit is 150kg, what is the best noseweight to aim for, rather than too light or too heavy, looking for a happy medium if possible, or is it just trial n error, thanks.....
Just load caravan evenly with some bias to front & you are there. Probably good enough just to load logically, ie everything where it should be & any extra items, ie awning/furniture etc over or just in front of axle. There may be a max towbar load stamped onto caravan weight plate. If so stick to around that.
my caravan has an MTPLM of 1272 kgs and car a towbar weight of 92 kgs max.i use a weight of 90 kgs and it pulls well.check also what your tow hitch weight max is.they say a rule of thumb is 7% of MTPLM or the max of the towbar weight.too light is as bad as too heavy.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
The best policy is to aim as close as possible to the vehicle towball limit as this will provide more stabilty when towing because if the noseweight is too light you may feel the caravan to be a bit unstable. You need the right downwards pressure in order to operate the caravan brakes properly as the caravan hitch pushes against the towball so if the weight is too light then basically the caravan will try and lift upwards causing the instability when braking or going down hill. My caravan is 1300 kgs. fully laden but only have a vehicle towball limit of 75 kgs. but I always aim to reach between 70 - 75 kgs. but no more than that. In your situation with 150 kgs. noseweight maybe a bit on the high side but I would certainly aim for no less than 100 kgs. for starters and see how the caravan tows. At least you can increase your noseweight if required whereas I can't because I'm at the maximum limit but have never had a problem with stabilty at all.
Later ALKO hitches are 150kg (my 2011 is) and I have the same 150kg towball limit as the OP, I tow with a full fat 4 x 4 (merc ML) and run a nose weight of 120kg, which gives an exceptionally stable tow and I don't have to fret about how to load the van
You can check on the hitch weight limit, its cast into the right side (standing in front)
