Hi everyone, my question is do you need seperate insurance for your caravan when towing, i always thought that while it was hitched up to the car it was covered with your car insurance, but was told by someone that thats not the case as you wouldnt be able to claim for any damage to the caravan through your car insurance, is this right as i have no insurance on mine, with that thought in my mind + the fact that finances are alittle streched at the moment, but really would like your views on this and personal thoughts thanks
Check your policy but usually the caravan is covered for cases where it hits someone and causes damage. The other party can then claim on your policy for their losses. However, your van may not be covered in the same way your car is so you pay for the repairs to the van. It's advisable to have separate caravan cover. There is always some idiot out there who may hit you and have no insurance. Then there is the risk of theft to insure against. You should notify your insurers that your car has a towbar and that you are towing. They may say that they are not interested but they would be if you claimed and hadn't told them!

Read your comprehensive car insurance small print, you will be covered for third party risks while towing. This means car/caravan is treated as one entity in an accident regarding third party cover, ie damage to other people & property, but as stated above you caravan is not covered for crash damage & obviously it is not covered for fire or theft either.
So if your caravan is only worth a few £100s its probably not worth insuring but if it is worth £1000s then obviously it should be insured.
