Hi Everyone!

I'm new on here, first post!!

I live in Milton Keynes, have bought an estate, had a towbar fitted now just need to find a caravan! Wondering if anyone locally to me is selling one? I need a 4 berth, preferably with a seperate bedroom/bunks at the back of the caravan with a curtain/door that slides over. Not much older than 1992, preferably a bit newer. Can anyone help?? Once I've found a caravan I also need advice on good places to store it, has anyone used the one in Cranfield?

Thankyou so much, so glad I found this site!

Natalie

Hi Natalie

Welcome - the first thing you need to do is check what is the maximum Towing weight your estate can legally tow, this can then give you an idea of what caravans options/weights are suitable for your car.

you may find these sites useful !

Both of the clubs recommend the caravan weighs no more than 85% of your car's kerbweight if you are new to towing.

If towing is a whole new game for you (it was for us when we bought our van) I'd heartily recommend the Practical Caravanning course http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/expert-advice/getting-started/training-courses/practical-caravanning-courses/

It teaches you how to hitch up safely, how not to electrocute/gas yourself, how to pitch level and safely, how to tow and park your van safely and legally, how to reverse, all sorts of really handy things. It's not the cheapest, and I know others will say it's unnecessary, but it gave me the confidence I needed to tow the van.

Incidentally, did you pass your driving test post 1997? Have a read here: http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/expert-advice/getting-started/having-the-right-licence-to-tow/

Lastly, buy a damp meter. It may save you a very expensive mistake.

Thankyou for your replies! We've been looking for ages so my husband has looked into the towing weights etc and we choose our car with these in mind. Our licenses are 1997 so just after the law change so we need to bear this in mind when buying a caravan.

Thankyou for the tip on the damp meter, I will definately do that.

Really looking forward to caravanning, it makes so much sense with 2 kids and a dog!

Good luck with your caravan search, but make sure you don't rush into anything. Any van can have problems with damp so make sure you go over it in great detail to make sure there aren't any problems.

Alternatively get it from a dealer who should give you a damp warranty. We spent a good couple of hours looking over our current van and the seller was good enough to just leave us to it.

Not looking on spending that much as we've never caravanned before so just need a started van to begin with to try it out for a season. I'm up for an older van with a bit of character!
