Have I been ripped off?
Was quoted £50 to remove old motor mover and £50 to fit it to my son's caravan. Also £50 to fit new (pre owned) mover to my van.All in one day. Fitter was some distance away and wanted £30 travel costs. Seemed reasonable but I decided to ask locally but forgot to ask the price.(Never assume!). Man was late arriving so gave me the chance to block up my van, remove old mover, set out new motors with cables connected and crossbar below fixing points, also control box in position with battery cables connected and holes drilled to battery box and isolating switch point. Coffee's and four hours later was hit with bill for £150. That's Powrtouch's retail charge but this was a local guy and a goodly part of the job was already done by me. I'll feel better if you think that was reasonable but I'm in pain at present.

You'd done most of the work, why didn't you fit it yourself and been £150 better off.

Was peeved because I was expecting about £50 and paid much more than worth for the amount of work left to do. Could(should) have done it myself but a bit past lying on concrete in the cold. There's four years warranty left so paid Powrtouch £40 to transfer to me and felt that installation by a recognised fitter may speed things up in the event of a claim. I'll be fitting my old mover to son's caravan-if it ever stops raining. Cash from sale of his Bigfoot will be mine I reckon. Thanks for the views. 72 and still learning!

Greetings,

To be fair you yourself said that he was there for four hours.
On top of that there is travelling time.

If I took my car to the specialist for that type of car fours labour equates to about £440 +Vat

Correct, he was there for four hours but I'd left him only about an hour's work to do.
Feeling not so sore about it now now. Good job he was late and didn't do the three jobs; removal from mine, fitting of new to mine and fitting my old to son's van. Probably have charged £400. I was prepared to pay a quoted price of £180 for the lot from the guys at Standish Caravans, so doing the rest myself is a saving overall.

I paid £680 for a new powrtouch mover plus fitting, plus drop plate. It took over three hours. If I could have found a second user one and got it fitted for that much, I'd have been hundreds of quids in, so I reckon you got a bargain there.

When I swopped my caravan a couple of years ago the dealer charged me £150 to swop mover, I have a new caravan on order and this dealer is charging me £150 to swop it again.    Dont think you have been done, he said a price and although you did a lot of the work he's not going to travel to you and not make a living.

My total outlay is £760.
Powrtouch Evolution Auto (the motors drive themselves onto the tyres),new last April. That's confirmed by Powrtouch.
New retail price is £995. Some dealers will include fitting at that price.
I paid £550 from P.Roberts Caravans, Honley. £20 delivery. £150 fitting-for which I did a lot of the work, £40 transfer of warranty to me. Saved £235 on new price, about 23%. So mustn't grumble. It's only money!

Footnote to my query, I just fitted my old mover to son's caravan. Four hours yesterday, including manhandling it backwards down sloping driveway to the road, turning it around, pushing it back up driveway, blocking it up to gain easy access, then dropping it all down and turning it back where it started when I realised that having the rear down on the deck on the upper slope wouldn't allow best access in front of the axle to fit the mover.Doh! Pretty cold yesterday so I packed up after loosely fitting the motors and crossbar, laying out the motor cables, fitting cables to control box, battery and main switch. Today, two hours to adjust and securely bolt clamps to chassis, clip all the cables to underside of van, tape up and cable-tie yards of excess cable in bed box, lower van off blocks and test. Works fine. Still reckon I left the guy about one hour's work for an experienced fitter. (Which I am now).
Forgot to mention, I had the same guy in last spring to do a basic service, brakes, hubs and hitch. No probs with the price charged but I did make him a gift of a Powrtouch control box and two drive motors complete with rollers-both working but one with broken bracket. Came with my van. The previous owner towed it with a Cherokee with the handbrake on. How would he not know? But the engine is about five litres. A brake drum disintegrated with obvious consequences. Son's Bigfoot ET mover now for sale. These were born before caravan motor movers were common but ideal for boat trailer, contractors trailers, if anyone knows of a good home.
