hey guys im new to this site and not really lived in portsmouth that long to understand the area or no it that well. 15 years ago i was in the army and now i guess im trying to relive my youth once again lol i have all the gear but im stuck on where to go i here the new forest is massive and good but then i was told u cant have camp fires? (is this true?) if so then im really not sure where to go. any help on this pls as wanna get out as soon as really. i dont want camp sites im more of a bush man on my own out the way kinda thing (middle of some woods)
You have answered your own question really. Camp in the middle of the woods where nobody can find you, just don't go giving away your location by lighting fires.
You are certainly not in 'no man's land', as all woods/forests are owned by someone - even if it's the forestry commission. The suggestion to look in the 'camping under canvas' section is probably the best advice. I imagine there must still be some "Waltzing Matilda" type of venues that allow camp fires, etc. in the UK, but probably a bit thin on the ground.
Get yerself to the Lakes. The fells are free, the National Trust wardens are few . . . and they just move you on if they find you . . . Did a lot o` that when I was a lad. But nobody stopped you then . . . and the sun was always shining lol!
------------- Peripheral people don`t have as much excitement but they sure live longer
The only places that you can legally wild camp in the UK are Dartmoor and Scotland. If you do it in England make sure that you are high enough up a hill not to be noticed and make sure that you leave no trace that you were there and the land owners and park wardens will turn a blind eye.
There is a forum run by trail magazine called lftgo.com (live for the great outdoors) and this has loads of info on wild camping in the UK.
