looking to buy a used van around the £5k mark, but partner is concerned about warmth at night.
having been caravanning myself for a number of years i know what to expect, but as she is new to the concept, some other input reference make/model & best for keeping warm at night would be appreciated thanks
Most caravans built now have 3 grade insulation but I suspect that vans in your price range will only be grade 2. Grade two is generally fine for all but the coldest of weather and of course you will have heating which can be run from gas or electrics. We tend not to leave the heating on over night and it can get a bit parky but if you have a decent duvet or sleeping bag its surprising how warm you keep.
We managed -10 last year in a grade 2 ok. Rather than fan heater we just left the unit on electric convector day and night to keep it reasonable. Our blue gas bottle for the first time ever refused to work due to this being too cold for this type of fuel. Without gas warming the van up to a reasonable temperature from a cold start with just Lecky took about two hours so you can understand us just leaving it on once we'd obtained the heat we wanted. We're changing over to the Orange units this Feb for our first trip of the year.
The hardest problem to overcome was a frozen water supply, but our newer van has an internal tank so,we will put this to use this year if it's cold.
if your looking for a van in the £5000 range, don`t worry about heating. They will all have, electric & gas blown air heating systems. We have caravaned in -12c with the electric heating & it`s been very cosy.
Hi rsm
We have been away in a grade two for a number of years a nice an heater ( saves your gas ) on a low heat at night and normally your truma unit will have electric element so you can be cosy at night.

------------- camping low monte in Spain March 2016
Snug as a bug in a rug. A modern twin sleeping bag on the double bed no problem. A small fan heater on a low thermostat. Often turned it off as it was too warm. We have woken to ice & snow outside but always very warm inside. That would have been a grade 2.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
