Hi everyone, as a new member I thought i would just give some info on myself and my family.Having been hotel people since myself and my wife have been holidaying, along came Zach 4 and Charlotte 1. We have jumped straight in the caravaning world and purchased a secondhand(mint) lunar inspiration twin axle 6 birth caravan. Not clued up about weight of a caravan i was then informed i would need something hefty to pull it so we chopped in our Mondeo and found myself an owner of a lovely Kia Sorento xt in black.Obviously being complete novices at this we are excited but a little nervous of our first outing as ive never hitched up a caravan or towed before. The one thing im not looking forward to is REVERSING!!!!! We are looking at sites close to us in Kettering Northamptonshire so we can get used to this caravaning lark.Any advice on towing, sites or any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.17

Hi and welcome - you're in the right place!

Ok, about us - we're a couple in our early 40's (me) and late 40's (hubby) and have 2 dogs. We started off with a used 2 berth caravan which we bought privately towards the end of 2005 (an ABI Award Transtar) and we are now onto our 3rd caravan and LOVE the lifestyle

For our very first trip out and for my hubby to get the "feel" of towing we chose a site that wasn't too far away - we had mainly motorway towing and the tow time was approx 1hr 20 mins.

So, I would say to pick a site that isn't too far but also a site that feels like you've gone away!

Take your time in making sure things are secure in your caravan - i.e. doors, cupboards etc closed properly! Take your time hitching up correctly and making sure things are working - i.e. lights, brakes and indicators at the back of the 'van.

It may be worth trying to find a site with large pitches and where the pitches are not too close together to allow more room for manoeuvring your car and 'van. I think we drove onto the pitch for our first few trips rather than reversing.

Try not to worry about others watching if you do need to reverse - I used to be paranoid that other campers were! But, we all have to start somewhere and you'll find most people will help and offer advice to a newbie. We've had offers to help take our awning down and other invaluable advice along the way.

There are towing courses you can do - I think the Caravan Club offer one but my hubby never took a course and he does perfectly well reversing and manoeuvring a 21ft+ caravan and tow car although we do "cheat" if it's a bit awkward as this one is fitted with a motor mover!

Good luck. There are lots of people on here who should be able to answer any questions you have over the coming months

You soon get into a routine for both setting off and arriving on site and remember even the most experienced caravanners had a first tow at some point.
For my piece of mind I like to know the tyre pressures are correct, wheel nuts torqued, load even and secure, securely hitched and stabilizer in place (I don't like distractions when hitching up). You then know you are as safe as you can be for the journey.
If you have problems on site you only have to ask and the vast majority of people are more than willing to help.

My advice is to make a list of all jobs to be done prior to departure. Securely hitched, stabiliser engaged, breakaway cable secured, corner steadies up, Jockey wheel raised, fridge to battery, Tyre pressures, lights working. That's some, I'm sure others will add to it. Oh and make sure you don't forget the bedding as we have done.

Hate to sound like a sourpuss but as you have such young children I'm guessing you may have passed your driving test after 1997? if so you need to read this as you caravan weighs 1550kg that only leaves you 1950kg for the towing vehicle and depending on model your Kia may be over 2000kg making it illegal for you to tow without additional testing  .

I didn't know this until I recently was interested in buying a folding camper and it was commented on another post, I passed my test after Jan 1997 so it applies to me but hubby passed before so doesn't apply to him .

Welcome to the world of caravanning
take your time and take it easy and you'll be fine.
Reversing a caravan isn't as hard as it looks, actually it's easier to reverse a caravan than a trailer.

It does sound like a heavy combination if you only have the basic licence. Perhaps it would be best to let us know what licence you have, together with the relevant weights.

Better safe than sorry. Did the car or caravan sales people mention this at all?

Hi

We are also a family with 2 children now ages 7 & 8, we started caravanning when they were 1 & 2 yrs old so they were very young, I have also caravanned years ago so probably been at it now for approx 12 years.

Advice I would give you:-

Get yourself onto a towing course with either the CC or C&CC both clubs run them and they are approx £100 for the weekend, they offer discount on your insurance once you have attended a towing course and they teach you everything you need to know about hitching up etc etc.

Make sure you have a set of in car dvd players to keep the children entertained whilst travelling, ours also use them in the van as they have their own bunk beds so we had sockets fitted in each of their bed areas.

We take a plastic box on each trip and ask the girls to choose toys for the weekend or holiday, they arent allowed anything too big or bulky, they usually take dolls, polly pockets stuff like that. We also keep in the van colouring felts that are washable and a couple of board games and scrap books for drawing. We also take a few dvds but dont watch alot of TV, it comes in handy if weather is wet! I keep a spare hat/gloves/scarf and rain coat in the van and dont take them from home. I aso take weliies in the boot of the car as it always rains.

We tend to choose sites where theres at least a playground for the kids, we like a variety of sites and stay on big sites such as Haven sites (some are really nice) and we also stay on small CC 5 van CLs which are also lovely. We do prefer being all service and being plugged in on elec/water as we like to use our own shower. Its nice to have a pool but thats a bonus. We usually go away with friends who we met caravnning and over the years we have met some fantastic friends. We usually all go away for New Year and I organise our annual trip to France for 5 families which is fantastic. We try to travel within 50 miles for a weekend as its eats into your time and diesel costs, we too have a Sorento and it is an excellent tow car and tows our caravan at 27mpg/42 solo. I always hunt for bargains when booking sites and this forum is the best place to look. Weve booked our France ferry for this year courtesy of UKCS forum posts and got it for £68 return in peak season with caravan/car and extra length.  We rarely pay over £30 for a weekend away unless its a special occasion and site that we are fond of.

Always look at UKCS for site reviews before you book as it gives you an idea of the pros and cons and tends to be accurate. I always review a site ive been on whether its in the UK or abroad.  Anything you need to know is on this site, or, you can post a question if you need to know something and you always get a reply usually quickly!

Its exciting stuff buying your first van and going out for the first time. Its my hobby and we all enjoy it which is good. I spend alot of time reading caravan mags, forums and looking online at sites, theres so much to research and it becomes a really enjoyable hobby. Its something that all our family benefit from and after a hard weeks work its lovely to get away at the weekend and switch off.

Happy caravanning!

Well first thing I want to do is thank everybody for your responses, all will be taking on board and definitely used.Having checked my license I passed in 93 so am ok,even so I think for confidence reasons I shall put myself through a towing course.I was a late starter to family life as didnt find the right lady to settle down with, hence the young children!!!!!! Am getting excited for our first trip, ferry meadows in Peterborough is 30ish miles from us so if anybody has stayed there it would be nice for a review if possible.Thank you again

We stayed at ferry Meadows a couple of years ago and going again this April for a week. Very nice site for a first experience - just search the site on here and you will see all the reviews.
