Find out what the current value is for your van and then add content cover to cover things like awning water barrels blankets etc,in fact everything thats in your van.
Try looking for similar aged vans of the same make/model on somewhere like http://www.caravanfinder.co.uk/ if you take an average over a few vans (probably excluding the really cheap, and really expensive adverts) this should give you a good inidication of what your van is worth.
I have insured my Swift Challenger 530 2006 with Caravan Guard for last Three years on Market value basis
BUT NOT ANY MORE....READ ON......
Each year my renewal notice gives a renewal premium based on the existing market value, and invites me to check with them what the current value is so that I do not pay more than necessary.
I ring them up,get new Glass's value for van from them,(nothing else changes),and they are able to reduce my premium by a few pounds.Worked well last few years.
This year they sent me a quote for renewal premium of £155,based on last years market value of van of £8300.
The current value has now dropped to £7825,and the chap said, err sorry about this but we will put your premium UP to £164...What the F***K........
I gave him an ear bashing !,listened to Vivaldi for a few minuets, whilst he went off to speak to his superiors.
Apparently they have a MINIMUM TOTAL COVER(van plus every thing else) insured value of £10000,and I had now dropped to £9825,apparently loosing discounts by doing so.
Chap said he thought Glass's tend to under value so they could just leave figures as they were (last years £8300)and charge £155 as original quote.
I said I bet he would not be saying that when possibly dealing with a claim in a few months time, and I would be offered glass's bottom book value!!
I said there was no point in my being over insured,so I would shop around first.Chap couldn't give a toss... so much for customer loyalty.
So far I am getting quotes ranging from £133.07 to £171.79 for exactly same details for cover.
Probably going to go with Caravan Club who come in at £160.98.
Whilst I could pay £155 and stay with Caravan Guard I would rather pay a fiver more than get stuffed,I feel they have just stuck two fingers up to me.
