If you want a bumper protector while coupling up with a swan neck towbar make one from plywood. About a foot square with a square notch cut out so its a tight push fit onto swan neck, just keep in boot & use when coupling up.

You only put the plywood on when you couple up, then take it off afterwards & it properly protects bumper. I doubt the plastic pad would protect from dents if you came back too hard & it wouldn't look that good anyway.

Those bumper protectors look great when you first put them on but soon the dirt gets behind them and looks rubbish especially if you have a light coloured car, we found on our last silver car it peeled at the corners and then looked shocking
I just used to jam a jumbo sponge in between the bumper and the tow hitch when hitching up, problem solved

Is the bumper protectors only to protect from reversing or are also to protect from the hitch hitting it while hard braking?

The hitch can't hit anything unless it comes off the ball & then you would have more to worry about than the bumper. If you have a flange towball you can fit a permanent steel protector as linked to. If you have a swan neck towball then the only thing you can do is make up a bash plate as I described & keep in your boot or use the stick on patch.

Got a Milenco pad....... it might stick ok on the paintwork, but certainly wont on the plastic trim some bumpers are made of, not smooth enough.

Another option is to use one or two mouse pads stuck or taped back to back. Make a couple of holes in the top corners and attach to the inside of the boot using some string. Just drop it down over the bumper when needed and lift out of sight when not.
