We are heading off in a few weeks to Betws-y-coed (from Liverpool). We have made this journey lots of times but never with the caravan in tow so we normally cut across country on some quite hair raising roads.
I have been looking at the map and it seems like the route that uses the best roads for towing is along the A55 as far as Conwy and then down the A470 to Betws-y-coed. Does anyone have experience of towing this route or can anyone recommend another caravan friendly route?
That is the way I would suggest but take care down the A470, it does have a few narrow parts. The only other way would be to go further towards Bangor and turn down the A5 back towards Betws but again the road does have its bad points but it was well used by the trucks to Hollyhead before the A55 was completed so is well useable.
i would use the A55-A470 take your time you will be fine ,there are roadworks about 400 yards after hitting the 470 but thats it a clear road through from there ,travelled it last week so up to date info .
take your time through colwyn bay area and stick to the speed limits due to unmarked police cars ,its the home of n/wales police so they are always around .
The A55 and A470 are your best routes, I wouldn't use any back roads with your caravan, if you are going to Riverside make sure that you arrive after 1.00PM as it would be a nightmare if you met another unit on the narrow road leading to the site.
There`s nothing to worry about on that road. We were debating on it when returning from Portmadog and came through Caernarvon instead becuase its got a new bi pass and less hills. . . but it too has it`s narrow bits!
