We were new to caravan I in Octoer and used our van twice since having it and its been in storage now since the end of October. I was just wondering what everyone else does to clean the water system through at the beginning of the season, we won't be bringing to caravan to the house so would rather have a straight forward method that's easy enough to do on arrival at the site. I'm sure I've read something about a product you flush through but don't need to flush freshwater through afterwards and it doesn't make your way task etc like Milton.

Info and advice much apprecated

Stick 2 table spoons of this in your fresh water barrel and leave for a couple of hours then rinse through with fresh water till the bleach smell has gone..dnot know of anything you dont have to flush out afterwards.

Hi i use Baby Milton tablets in the water barrel 40 - 50 ltr leave it a few hours and drain, then half fill it again and add more tablets and run this through the water system, until full. (do not put the water heating on), again leave it an hour or so and drain down fully and reflush with clean water. Never had any problems doing it this way.

Hope it helps.

That's one of the jobs for tomorrow after siting the van on the seasonal pitch. Luckily we can pipe the waste direct to drain, so will just open taps to flush system through.

There have been many posts on here in the past about not using Milton to clean out your water system.

To quote from an earlier post 'Puriclean actually destroys Bio-film whereas Milton doesn't plus Milton contains a harsh chemical that can damage internal steel components in the hot water tank.'

I would advise using Puriclean.

Thanks all. So fill the aqua roll with the solution get all taps running as you would normally, leave a couple of hours then flush through with fesh water until the smell goes? Easy enough. Do yu just do that for your first trip or after long periods. What's the maximm time you'd leave it without doing it?

I fill the aqua roll with the solution, pull it through the pipes so that they are all filled with the solution, turn the taps off and leave in the roll and the pipes for a couple of hours, then empty all out. Rinse the roll out a few times, then fill with fresh water, pump through system. I usually do that at least twice before the water doesn't taste of anything but water.

Just use a 4 ltr water bottle for the couple of hours it takes to do the job. I usually do this chore just at the beginning of the season, using Puriclean. After each trip I make sure the pipes are pumped empty of all water, empty the water barrel and air dry at home, until it's completely dry inside. Next time out, I fill the barrel and run the water through a bit before using.

isnt milton just a weak bleach solution containing Sodium Chloride and Sodium Hypochloride.

any chemists on here?

i thought that bleach was not so friendly with the aluminium in the heater unit.

so far i have only heard anecdotal evidence of milton being an issue...anyone got anything to support this?

i have also heard vinegar works well.

interstingly on the Truma site, they say that they dont use bleach products as its not environmentally friendly, i cant see any mention of being an issue with regards to damage.

Yes Milton can corrode inner metals, if you are allowing it to be left for a longer time than a few hours once maybe twice per year, If somebody was doing this prior to every trip (assuming 7 - 10 trips per year, then it might get to be a problem. When we had babies we cleaned everything in milton even the steamer and and associated parts and it never degrades those, i also think it depends on the type of water you have in your area, We have soft water here so Limes scale and corrosion has never been an issue on heating elements, but we sure do notice it when on holiday down south for a few weeks with the kettle etc.

If anything its people being drawn into commercial advertising where being brainwashed that a particular product is the only one that will do and hiking the price up, when the word "caravan" is mentioned.

Milton if its good enough for babies its good enough for the caravan.

I can't wait to get away.
Should have been away this weekend (would have been first trip of the season) but I still haven't replaced the roof vent that was blown off at the end of last year.
mine isn't a standard size (being an older caravan) and I am struggling to find a replacement.
It is looking like I am going to have to cut the roof to make the aperture larger to find a skylight that will fit.
Might crack on with that tomorrow as I am itching to get away now!
